Montemor-O-Novo offers several distinct reasons to visit: its monumental castle complex, sacred architecture, prehistoric cave art, and literature and wine. Its cultural history can be seen in museums, churches and monasteries; advance booking is required for the Gruta do Escoural. Wine experiences and regional produce round out the selection.

Castle, Museums and Sacred Art

The monumental complex of Montemor-O-Novo Castle is a visitor attraction and leisure space. The Centro Interpretativo do Castelo is housed in the former 14th-century church of São Tiago. Another way to explore the area’s history is through the collections and exhibition spaces at the Núcleo Museológico do Convento de São Domingos. Its archaeological museum focuses on ceramics, sacred art, ethnography and bullfighting, among other subjects.

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Visitação is a 16th-century chapel in the Manueline-Mudéjar style. Its 18th-century tile panels depict scenes from the life of Mary. The sacristy contains around 200 votive offerings, including painted altarpieces, photographs, wax models of body parts, ribbons and two taxidermied animals. The oldest votive offering dates from 1799.

The nave of the Igreja e Convento de SĂŁo Francisco offers another art-historical highlight: blue-and-white tile panels depict scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Convento de SĂŁo Francisco bears witness to the development of Franciscan Observant monasteries in the 16th and 17th centuries. By contrast, the church and crypt of SĂŁo JoĂŁo de Deus belonged to a former monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers, built as the Portuguese headquarters of the order.

Cave Art and Literary Connections

The Gruta do Escoural spans two widely separated periods: it preserves Upper Palaeolithic rock paintings and engravings and was used as a necropolis during the Neolithic. Visits must be booked at least 48 hours in advance, and no more than ten people are admitted. Booking conditions can change, so check them before planning your visit.

The Levantado do Chão literary trail explores a different theme. It connects Montemor-O-Novo with Évora and Lisbon through literary routes and attractions. It focuses on the historical references in the work Levantado do Chão, as well as the biography of José Saramago and his time in Lavre. For travellers who appreciate literature as a way to explore history, this is a distinct highlight.

Wine, Regional Produce and Cultural Events

Montemor-O-Novo is part of the Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo, which showcases wines, vineyards, wineries and the people behind wine production. Quinta da Plansel offers vineyard and winemaking experiences, as well as wine tastings in the Alentejo. Under the name Wine&Dine, it offers menus pairing its wines with local cuisine.

Queijo de Évora D.O.P. is also part of the region’s culinary scene: the municipality of Montemor-O-Novo lies within its protected designation of origin area. The cheese is an aged sheep’s milk cheese with a hard or semi-hard texture. Together, wine and cheese offer two different ways to explore the region, alongside its architecture and archaeology.

The Ciclo da Primavera takes place from March to June and has been running for more than 20 years. Across most of the municipalities and localities in the Concelho, it features more than 30 multidisciplinary cultural and artistic events. If you would like to plan your trip around this series, check the specific dates for your travel dates.

Countryside and Train Planning

The Monfurado area is important for the conservation of several bat species, which inhabit the caves of Monfurado. This adds a natural-history dimension to the region’s cultural and culinary attractions.

For onward travel planning: the EN2 towards Casa Branca leads to a railway station with connections on the Barreiro–Beja and Barreiro–Évora lines. Check current train connections and timetables before travelling.
