Penela brings a medieval castle and several churches with different architectural and artistic histories into focus. The themes are clear: at the castle, the focus is on its fortifications and views; at the churches, on their architectural features, styles and works of art. Nearby trails and nature spots add a distinct note. This makes it possible to combine cultural history with landscapes without treating the different excursion destinations as if they were the same.

Discover the Fortress and Churches

Penela Castle is a medieval fortress dating back to the 11th century and has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Its layout is roughly triangular, and three gates lead into the complex. The walls offer views of the Serra da Lousã. Two aspects therefore come together here: the fortress’s clearly described form and its views of the landscape.

Inside Penela Castle is the Igreja Matriz de São Miguel. It is designed in the Renaissance style and houses a 1530 image of the Madonna and Child by João de Ruão. A visit to this church therefore focuses both on its Renaissance design and on a specific, dated work of art.

The Igreja Matriz de Santa Eufémia offers a different architectural point of reference: its present-day structure dates from the 16th century. Arcades of the Tuscan order separate its three naves. While the Renaissance design and Madonna image stand out at São Miguel, the layout and arcades draw the eye at Santa Eufémia. The comparison shifts from a single work of art to the layout of a church interior.

The Igreja da Misericórdia also has its own historical and architectural features. It was founded in 1559 by decree of D. Sebastião. Its main portal combines elements of the Manueline, Renaissance and Mannerist styles. The Pelourinho de Penela dates from the Middle Ages and adds another historic object to the architectural heritage. Here, the different periods are evident not only in dates but also in their distinct forms and stylistic elements.

Nature and Trails Nearby

Nearby, the Cascata da Pedra Ferida is more than 20 metres high and flows all year round. A linear trail connects it to Praia Fluvial da Louçainha. The waterfall and river beach thus form a connected nature-themed outing. Check the current condition of the trail before your visit, as the infrastructure may change.

For a circular route, consider the PR1 Rota do Rebanho: this circular hiking trail starts and ends in Ferraria de São João. The full route reaches the rocky ridge of the Serra de São João and offers views in every direction. The Portuguese Central Way of St James is different: it passes through the municipality of Penela in the Rabaçal area; one section can be covered on foot or by bicycle. The options described therefore differ both in the PR1’s circular route and in the modes of transport mentioned for a section of the Way of St James. Check route conditions and signage in advance.

Another nearby excursion destination is the archaeological site of Villa Romana do Rabaçal. Visits require an appointment in advance and must be accompanied by a museum technician. Confirm the appointment before planning your visit.
