In Penacova, striking geological formations along the Mondego meet mills, viewpoints and cultural attractions. The different places tell their own stories: from windmills and watermills to the rocks along the river and manuscripts associated with the Monastery of LorvĂŁo. This makes it possible to discover Penacova through specific landscape and cultural themes.
Mills, Views and Remembrance
The Moinhos de Gavinhos comprise 14 windmills, five of which are in working order. From there, the view extends north to the Serra do Bussaco and southwest to the Serra da Aveleira. The mills thus offer two clearly distinct perspectives on the surrounding mountain ranges: one to the north and one to the southwest. Those interested in the structures will also find a link here to the history of milling, which extends beyond the windmills.
The Museu do Moinho Vitorino Nemésio is located in Portela de Oliveira, within the forest area of the Serra do Bussaco. It preserves the history of windmills and watermills, as well as the memory of their millers. Together with the Moinhos de Gavinhos, the museum offers a view of two types of mills and the people whose work was connected with them. The windmills at Gavinhos and the museum each highlight a different aspect: the preserved structures and their views in one case, and the history of the mills and their millers in the other.
The Livraria do Mondego and Its Geological Formation
The Livraria do Mondego is a natural monument on the banks of the Mondego near Penacova. It consists of Ordovician quartzite, arranged almost vertically near the river. The formation was shaped over more than 400 million years. The type of rock, its orientation and its location by the river give the site its distinctive geological character; the long timespan makes clear that this is a landscape feature whose formation far predates human history.
There are also two specific reference points for locating this natural monument: it can be seen from the IP3 near the bridge over the Mondego at Penacova, and it is directly accessible via the Estrada Nacional 2. Visibility from the bridge and access from the national road are different ways of locating the Livraria in the landscape. Alongside its geology, its position on the Mondego and its relationship to the roads are also central to the site.
Valley Views and Scenery from the Vila
For views in the Vila of Penacova, the Mirante Emydio da Silva and the Pérgola Raúl Lino offer different vantage points. The Mirante is at the head of the Vila and looks out over the valley. The Pérgola is in the centre of the Vila; its terrace and esplanade invite visitors to admire the scenery. You can choose between the valley view from the head of the Vila and the landscape seen from a centrally located terrace. Both places offer their own perspective on the landscape, though they are neither at the same location nor from the same vantage point.
Routes and Activities on the Water
The Centro Trail Running Carlos Sá offers a network of marked routes homologated by the Associação de Trail Running Portugal (ATRP). It is aimed at those interested in exploring Penacova on foot; the routes’ signage and homologation are the specific features described. Kayaking offers another way to get active on the water: in Penacova, it is possible to paddle down the Mondego.
The Praia Fluvial do Reconquinho is another water-related attraction in the area. A wooden footbridge connects it to the opposite riverbank and is also often used for jumping into the water. Kayaking on the river and jumping from the bridge are two very different ways to experience the Mondego as part of a stay. They represent different activities and can be chosen according to personal interests.
Manuscripts and a Guided Visit in LorvĂŁo
At the Centro Interpretativo do Mosteiro de Lorvão in Lorvão, the “Livro das Aves” and the “Apocalipse do Lorvão” are presented as manuscripts associated with the monastery. The “Apocalipse do Lorvão” is also included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. A contextualised tour of the Mosteiro de Lorvão takes visitors through the Portaria, the church and the cloister. The manuscripts and the tour’s three stops highlight different cultural aspects: one focuses on works associated with the monastery, the other on the spaces along the route.
