Pereira combines a rich history of religious architecture with regional traditions and the Paul de Arzila wetland. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Pereira, these different themes can shape the focus of your stay: churches and historic buildings, a tradition observed during Lent, or the landscape on the eastern edge of the parish. The Grande Rota do Mondego, a long-distance linear trail that passes through Pereira, is another option.

Religious Buildings and History

The portal of the Igreja da Misericórdia de Pereira is considered a rare example of Barroco Joanino in Portugal’s Central Region. Its style is similar to that of the portal of the Colégio de S. Pedro in the courtyard of the University of Coimbra. The Igreja also has gilded altarpieces and tiles made in Coimbra in the 18th century. The portal and its furnishings offer different insights into the town’s architectural and artistic history.

The Misericórdia of Pereira was founded in 1574. Its history is distinct from that of the church building: the Igreja da Misericórdia was built from the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. At the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Pranto there is a 15th-century limestone sculpture attributed to Mestre João Afonso. The chapel’s present building dates to a testamentary bequest made in 1674 by Manuel Soares de Oliveira, who was from Pereira.

The Capela de SĂŁo Tiago also commemorates a specific historical event: relatives of those who died built it as a memorial after an epidemic in the 14th century. The Casa do Despacho e Hospital dates from 1723 to 1724 and is used as a residence. Different aspects are therefore central to these buildings: their construction dates, artistic furnishings, endowments and remembrance.

Living Traditions and Local Culture

Amentar das Almas is still observed in Pereira during Lent, from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday, on Tuesday and Friday evenings. If this custom is relevant to your travel plans, bear in mind its limited timeframe and the weekly schedule described. It is a seasonal point of interest, while other cultural aspects of the town are not tied to these weeks.

Since 1966, the Grupo Folclórico da Vila de Pereira has collected, reconstructed and shared the culture of Baixo Mondego. Queijadas de Pereira offer another example of cultural transmission: ingredients passed down through generations and traditional baking times are still carefully preserved. Together, these examples show that Pereira’s cultural heritage is carried on both through organised cultural work and through a local baking tradition.

Wetland and Grande Rota do Mondego

The Paul de Arzila nature reserve lies on the eastern edge of the parish of Pereira. This low-lying wetland covers 535 hectares: 165 hectares make up the central core and 370 hectares the protection zone. This breakdown conveys the scale of the area and distinguishes its core from the surrounding protection zone.

The Grande Rota do Mondego (GR48) is another option for hikers. This linear trail is 142 kilometres long and passes through Pereira. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between two different ways to experience nature: the wetland on the eastern edge of the parish, or a long trail that crosses Pereira.

Getting There and Choosing Your Stay

The main access route to Pereira from the Coimbra–Alfarelos expressway is via the EM-341. This also provides access to the A1 at the Coimbra-South toll station. The Linha do Norte also runs through Pereira. On this section, suburban trains operate between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, as well as regional trains between Coimbra and Entroncamento. Check current train services and suitable stops for your specific journey.

When looking for a holiday rental in Pereira, it helps to first decide what brings you there: would you like to focus mainly on church architecture and history, are you interested in the Lenten tradition, or are Paul de Arzila and the GR48 your priorities?
