Marinha das Ondas is a destination for travellers who want to combine the coast with architectural history and festival traditions. Praia da Leirosa is located in Marinha das Ondas, Figueira da Foz. Its very large sandy beach and powerful waves define its coastal character; there are also chapels with distinctive architectural styles and histories. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide early what to focus on: should your stay be shaped mainly by the beach, architecture or a trip to a festival?

Praia da Leirosa: Sand and Waves

Praia da Leirosa has a very large sandy beach with powerful waves and good conditions for surfing and swimming. There are no deep areas or currents there. These features go together when choosing a coastal stay: surfing and swimming are both part of the beach’s profile, while the powerful waves are a defining characteristic. If you value especially calm water, take the waves into account when making your decision.

Fishing Village and Dune Landscape

Leirosa is a traditional fishing village. Between it and Praia da Costa de Lavos lies a protected, almost uninhabited dune area. These are distinct points of reference for understanding the coastal area: Leirosa’s traditional village character and the dunes in between. If you do not choose a destination based solely on its type of beach, you can also take the character of the settlement and landscape into account.

Religious Architecture and Festival Traditions

The Capela de Nossa Senhora de Ceiça is considered a Baroque pilgrimage church. The former hermitage collapsed in 1590; the present-day chapel was built in 1602. Its octagonal floor plan is complemented by a lower porch supported by Doric columns. Octagonal means that the floor plan has eight sides; the porch is another specific architectural feature. This makes it possible to distinguish the Baroque classification, the building’s history and its architectural form. The Capela de S. Miguel is also among the important architectural monuments of the Freguesia de Marinha das Ondas.

Celebrations in honour of Nossa Senhora das Ondas take place every year. If you want to plan your stay around a festival, check the specific dates for your travel period. A clearly dated example from gastronomy is the II Festival GastronĂłmico dos Sabores do Mundo: the 2022 edition featured Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Argentina and Brazil. The list of participants offers an insight into this particular edition of the festival, not into the date of a future event.
