Condeixa A Nova can be explored through several cultural and historical questions: the Roman presence in the Terras de SicĂł, phases of construction and renovation, and churches with different histories. These offer various ways to approach the history of the area. When choosing what to visit, you can consider whether Roman history, the development of individual buildings or changes in church history are of particular interest to you.

Museums and Opening Hours

The PO.RO.S – Museu Portugal Romano em Sicó explores the Roman presence in the Terras de Sicó and the meeting of cultures that shaped the history of the area. The museum is located at Quinta de S. Tomé, Avenida Bombeiros Voluntários de Condeixa-a-Nova 41. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00; last admission is at 17:15.

The Casa-Museu Fernando Namora can be visited on a self-guided tour Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00. It opened to the public on 30 June 1990. These time slots make a practical difference when planning your day: PO.RO.S is open on Sundays, while visiting hours at the Casa-Museu are interrupted at midday. Check the opening hours again before your visit.

Palaces: Construction and Change

The Palácio Sotto Mayor was built in the 17th century and later remodelled during the Pombaline period. It is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). Three aspects can therefore be distinguished in this building: its construction period, a later change and its legal heritage classification. The Pombaline remodelling belongs to a later phase than the original construction, expanding the view beyond the building's original year.

The Palácio dos Figueiredos was also built in the 17th century. It is also known as the Paço dos Figueiredos and the Paço do Capitão-Mor; these names refer to the same building. Both palaces thus share a historical period, but the recorded details differ: for the Sotto Mayor, they include a later remodelling and its classification, while for the Figueiredos, the name variants help identify it. This makes comparing the buildings more specific than simply noting that they date from the same century.

Churches with Different Historical Connections

The Igreja Matriz de Condeixa was built in the 16th century by order of D. Manuel I. The Igreja de Santa Cristina replaced an older church at the same site. Their histories have different emphases: for the Matriz, the construction period and the commission are key; for Santa Cristina, it is the sequence of an older and a newer church building on the same site. Comparing them is therefore about more than two names; it also reveals two different historical developments.

A Guide to Choosing

If you want to focus first on the Roman past, PO.RO.S offers a clearly defined theme. The palaces provide a different perspective on construction periods, later changes and names; the churches foreground a commission and a replacement at the same site. For tourist information in Condeixa, the tourist office is located in Casa dos Arcos. You can factor the museum opening hours listed above into your plans and check them again before your visit.
