Thermal springs, a historic bathhouse and two routes with distinct character give Caldas da Felgueira a clear focus for a stay. The first recorded mention of the thermal springs appears in the Memórias Paroquiais of 1758; they were recognised and awarded at the 1867 Paris World’s Fair. These dates mark different milestones: the early written record and later recognition. In Caldas da Felgueira, thermal traditions, architectural history and landscape sit side by side.

Thermal Services and Care

Termas da Felgueira offers spa programmes centred on relaxation and care. Specific programme details may change; if you have a particular service in mind, enquire in advance. Visitors are looked after by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, healthcare professionals and thermal spa staff. Operational arrangements may also change. If you are planning to make use of this care, check the current arrangements before your visit.

Buildings with a Thermal History

The Balneário Termal das Caldas da Felgueira is the town’s original thermal bathhouse. It was built in the late 19th century beside the Vale de Madeiros spring. The history of the thermal springs can therefore also be seen in a particular building.

The Antigo Buvette das Águas Frias das Termas das Caldas da Felgueira is on the right bank of the Mondego, upstream from the bridge over the river. Its use is part of the history of the thermal baths: staff collected cold water there, which had been prescribed to many visitors to Caldas da Felgueira. This historical function describes the site’s former use.

Two Routes, Different Highlights

The Circuito das Caldas da Felgueira follows country paths through the landscape around the thermal baths and along the banks of the Mondego. Trail conditions may vary.

The Percurso Caldas da Felgueira starts in Caldas da Felgueira and passes the landmark buildings of the Grande Hotel. Its route includes forest paths with granite boulders, maritime pines, eucalyptus trees and shrub species. It also passes the Orca do Folhadal, a megalithic burial monument.

The routes therefore have different highlights: the Circuito focuses on country paths, the thermal-bath landscape and the banks of the Mondego; the Percurso links forest paths with the Grande Hotel and a megalithic monument. When choosing between the two descriptions, consider whether you would rather focus on the river landscape or on the forest and archaeological heritage.

Azulejo Heritage and Local Routes

Azulejo heritage sites are also among the cultural attractions to visit in Caldas da Felgueira. Public access to these sites is guaranteed; access arrangements may change. Check them before your visit.

The Antigo Buvette das Águas Frias is also part of the municipal route “Do Neolítico ao Cisterciense”. This connection adds another local context to its historical use: the Buvette can be linked both to the thermal history and to a municipal route.

When looking for a hotel in Caldas Da Felgueira, it can help to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: thermal services, architectural history or the different routes. This will help you choose accommodation that suits what brings you to the area.
