Two questions can help guide a trip to Parada: Which landscape would you like to experience, and which of the routes described best suits your interests? The elevated Castro de Ciragata, the PR10 BGC circular hike and the PR5, which passes through the village, offer different points of interest. There are also festival traditions and traces of history.
Plateau and Hilly Landscape
Castro de Ciragata, also known as Cidadelhe de Parada, sits on a hill near Parada, at an altitude of almost 900 metres. From there, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the surrounding plateau. Its elevation, hillside setting and views make it a destination for its landscape: if you want to make sweeping views across the plateau a focus of your trip planning, the Castro is a specific point of interest.
Its location near Parada is distinct from being located within the village. The PR5 hiking trail offers a different way to experience the landscape, passing extensive olive groves near Parada. So, alongside the view from the hill, the groves are another characteristic landscape feature to explore.
Two Hiking Trails, Different Areas of Focus
The PR10 BGC hiking trail is 13 kilometres long and follows a clockwise circular route. It leads to the medieval Ponte de Grijó over the Rio Sabor. The bridge connects Outeiro and Parada. If you want to combine a circular hike with a historic structure by the river, this route offers a clear focus: its distance, direction and bridge are specified, without implying a set walking time.
The PR5 has a different focus. It passes through Parada via Rua da Escola Primária in the direction of the Santuário de Nossa Sra do Carmo, and passes extensive olive groves near Parada. This distinguishes it from the PR10 circular route: the PR5 focuses on the passage through the village, the street and the direction of the sanctuary, while the PR10 focuses on its 13-kilometre loop and the Ponte de Grijó.
This information provides a practical basis for making your own choice, without treating the two routes as the same. If you first choose a circular hike, the PR10’s length gives you a specific figure to plan around. If the route through Parada and its olive groves sounds more appealing, the PR5 is the trail that fits that focus. If you plan to combine them, consider each route according to its own course.
Festival Traditions and Cultural History
A previous edition of the Festa de Santo Estêvão in Parada ran from 26 to 28 December. The programme included a communal lunch on the first day. The festival tradition continued until 2022. In 2015, the Festa was held alongside the VIII Feira de Artesanato e Produtos Regionais de Parada. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates of the relevant edition before arranging your accommodation.
At one edition of the Feira, high-quality regional products such as honey, Fumeiro and bread were offered, along with handicrafts. This provides a historical insight into the connection between regional produce and crafts at the fair, but it is not a current offering for your stay.
An inscription also points to Parada’s history: an account published on 22 March 2025 reports that the inscription on the lintel above the main door in Parada recalls a vow made by the inhabitants during a major plague in MDIX. This remains a traditional interpretation. An account published on the same date mentions three painted ex-votos on a wall of the presbytery; two bear the years 1768 and 1779. The ex-votos and the reported vow offer different ways into the area’s cultural history: one recalls a plague and a vow, while the other refers to two votive paintings with specific dates.
Plan a Suitable Stay
When looking for a holiday apartment in Parada, you can start by deciding which of these themes matters most for your stay: the hillside location and views across the plateau, a 13-kilometre circular hike, the PR5 through the village, or the festival and cultural history. For choosing a hike, the PR10’s length and circular route, and the course of the PR5, are the specific differences. Include a planned festival as a confirmed travel date only once the dates for the relevant edition have been announced.
