Atenor brings together several different reasons to visit. The Centro de Valorização do Burro de Miranda is dedicated to the native Burro de Miranda donkey breed; the Ronda das Adegas draws on the local tradition of tasting new wine in the village cellars. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a guided visit, an event whose programme varies by edition, and other features of the area that are of tourist interest.

Meet the Burro de Miranda at the centre

The Centro de Valorização do Burro de Miranda (CVBM) is located in Atenor and is home to around 60 donkeys of the Burro de Miranda breed. On a guided visit, visitors learn about AEPGA’s contribution to preserving this native breed. Other topics include daily care, the donkeys’ life cycle and their abilities. The visit presents conservation work alongside the animals’ everyday lives, rather than focusing on just one aspect of the breed. These topics complement one another: the life cycle offers a view of the animals over time, while daily care and their abilities describe other aspects of interacting with them.

Nordeste Burriqueiro: a four-day journey

Nordeste Burriqueiro is a four-day hike, partly self-catered, accompanied by two Burros de Miranda. This makes it quite different in duration from a visit to the centre: the hike takes four days, while the guided visit is a single visit with a specific focus. If you would like to include the hiking format in your travel plans, check in advance whether an edition is taking place and when. This will help you fit the duration into your itinerary before deciding on other activities.

Ronda das Adegas: wine, food and crafts

The Ronda das Adegas is a cultural and gastronomic event in Atenor. It is rooted in the local tradition of tasting new wine in the village cellars. At one edition, visitors could explore around 20 adegas and tasquinhas, sample wine and enjoy dishes such as grilled lamb, wild boar, sausages, feijoada, Posta Mirandesa, grilled chicken and Caldo Verde. That edition also included craft demonstrations and handicraft workshops. The Ronda is therefore not limited to wine tasting: food and craft demonstrations are also part of the event. The specific offering may vary between editions. If you would like to plan your trip around the Ronda, check the event dates and take the programme for the relevant edition into account.

Old watermills in Atenor

Atenor’s old watermills are also among the area’s tourist attractions.

Plan your trip around your interests and timeframe

The differences between the travel options are clear: a visit to the CVBM focuses on the breed and its care, while the Ronda brings together wine, food and crafts. Nordeste Burriqueiro, on the other hand, takes four days. This comparison helps you choose between a guided visit, an event tied to specific dates, and a multi-day hike.
