Felgar lies on a sunny slope near Cabeço da Mua, between the northern side of the Serra do Roboredo and the Sabor Valley. Views of mountains and valleys offer one perspective on the village; religious buildings, craft traditions, archaeological traces and a historic river crossing provide further points of interest. The choice of location can therefore be considered in terms of both landscape and cultural history.

Location and Landscape

From Cabeço da Mua, the parish of Felgar offers impressive views of mountains and valleys. Together with its hillside setting, this landmark helps explain the village’s landscape: Felgar lies between the northern side of the Serra do Roboredo and the Sabor Valley.

Churches and Architectural History

The Igreja de SĂŁo Miguel in Felgar has a simple Renaissance character and was altered at a later date. The church also contains an image of Our Lady with the Child, attributed to the late 15th century. The church thus brings together an architectural form that has changed over time and an image attributed to the late Middle Ages.

The Capela de Santa Bárbara offers a different perspective. It stands on a large deposit of iron-smelting slag, linking the chapel’s location to the history of ironworking. Inside, there is a barrel vault and coffered ceilings painted with scenes from the life of the patron saint. A barrel vault is a curved ceiling form, while coffered ceilings draw the eye to painted panels. The connection to ironworking and the religious imagery bring different themes together in one building.

Crafts, Archaeology and the Sabor

Traditional crafts in Felgar include pottery, weaving, patchwork quilts and ironwork. Traditional pottery is documented from the 17th century onward. The archaeological complex of Silhades and Castelinho takes visitors back to a much earlier period, with evidence of settlement dating to the Iron Age.

For many generations, the Rio Sabor valley has contributed to the prosperity of Felgar and neighboring settlements. Until the 1980s, Cilhades was an important river crossing served by a ferry. It enabled the movement of people and goods between the two banks of the Rio Sabor; in 1982, it was replaced by a pontoon. The history of the area thus links the valley’s economic importance with the former transport connection across the river.

Walking Routes in Felgar

The Passeio pelas Minas circuit lists the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Amparo in Felgar as its seventh stop. It is a self-guided walk. If you plan to take it, check the latest information about the route in advance. A path also runs alongside the Ribeiro dos Moinhos in Felgar. This means a specific stop at a sanctuary and a path associated with the Ribeiro dos Moinhos offer two distinct local points of reference.
