From the summit of Monte do Castelo de Linhares, panoramic views extend across the Douro and the village of Linhares. This gives your stay a clear connection to the landscape. Walking trails and historic buildings add further dimensions, showcasing different sides of the area. This lets you include nature and culture side by side in your travel plans.

Walking Trails and Landscapes along the Douro

A 13.2-kilometre circular route through Linhares passes Quedas d'Alto, a waterfall, the Miradouro dos Moinhos and the Solar dos Sampaios. The stated distance provides a concrete reference for planning the hike, while the named stops give the route a clear landscape and cultural context.

The Trilho de Linhares is classified as a PR short circular trail within the municipal walking trail network of Carrazeda de Ansiães. Its starting point is beside the Capela de Nª Srª de Fátima, near the parish church. A municipal project provides for information boards at the start and end of each trail, describing the route in detail. As route details may change, check them before setting out. Confirm the starting point locally if needed.

Fraga das Ferraduras is a granite batholith beside a footpath that once linked Linhares with the right bank of the Douro. A large stretch of the Douro landscape, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies near Fraga. A medieval paved road in Linhares also leads to the riverside area of the Douro. This brings together landscapes and historic routes in different forms.

Churches, Pelourinho and Local History

The parish church of Linhares is an 18th-century building that replaced an older church on the same site. Its nave and the areas on either side of the triumphal arch contain gilded wooden altarpieces. The Igreja Paroquial de S. Miguel de Linhares also has an 18th-century coffered ceiling and is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. Its construction date, predecessor building and furnishings offer different points of reference for the church’s history.

The Pelourinho de Linhares was probably erected in the 17th century and moved from its original location to its present site in the 1940s. It consists of three steps, a smooth round shaft and a finial in the form of a Florão. Its probable construction and the much later relocation are two distinct dates in its history.

At Castelo de Linhares, the archaeologically documented settlement includes Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, Roman and medieval phases. The castle remained in use until the late Middle Ages. These different dates show that the area’s history is not limited to a single period.

Linhares’ history as a settlement is also documented: in the 11th century, King Fernando the Great granted Linhares a charter (foral). The former wine press, Escorregadeira, points to another aspect of local heritage: wine production in the past. Together with the church, Pelourinho and castle, it offers further points of interest for exploring local history.
