Vilar da Veiga offers several distinct perspectives for a stay: the seasonal communal Vezeira, Praia Fluvial do Alqueirão on the Caniçada Reservoir, and the PR10 route variants. For planning, it is worth considering these themes in terms of the questions each answers: the Vezeira provides a seasonal reference point, the beach represents the shoreline landscape, and the hiking routes differ in distance and course. This lets you choose your focus before looking for a hotel.

The Vezeira through the year

The “Vezeira de Vilar da Veiga” is a centuries-old communal practice. Cattle owners support one another with costs and take turns grazing their livestock in the warm months of spring and summer in the Serra do Gerês. In the parish of Vilar da Veiga, the Vezeira takes place every year continuously from May to September. If you would like to include this custom in your travel plans, you can use this period as a seasonal reference point. On November 22, 2023, Portugal’s Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC) approved the inclusion of the “Vezeira de Vilar da Veiga” in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

History at the site and by the reservoir

The Chapel of Santa Eufémia, near the thermal baths in Vilar da Veiga, offers another historical perspective. It once served as a royal chapel and was built at the behest of King João V. Its former function and royal commission complement one another: one detail concerns the chapel’s use, the other its construction.

Praia Fluvial do Alqueirão lies on the shore of the Caniçada Reservoir in Alqueirão, Vilar da Veiga. QUERCUS awarded it the “Gold” quality distinction. This brings together its shoreline setting and a specific quality mark, offering guidance to anyone choosing a destination with both the landscape and this distinction in mind.

Hiking: route variants and walking times

On the PR10 – Trilho da Preguiça, you can distinguish the route variants by their length and course. Route I is the longest, at just under 6 kilometres; Route III is the shortest and follows the banks of the River Gerês. Comparing the routes lets you weigh the longest variant and its approximate distance against the shortest variant and its riverside course.

The PR10 preserves vegetation formations that are relatively close to the original vegetation in terms of species diversity and structure. This original vegetation, which once covered the entire region, was oak forest. The connection to oak forest adds a perspective on the landscape and its vegetation to the choice based on distance and course.

A footpath of about 1.5 kilometres leads from Aldeia da Ermida to the Vela viewpoint; the walk takes around 30 minutes. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change, and treat the distance and duration as approximate.
