In Gerês, there is plenty to discover, from thermal history to viewpoints, hiking trails and mountain landscapes. When planning your trip, it helps to choose a focus first: would you like to explore the thermal baths and their history, visit viewpoints, or discover trails and cultural landscapes? Each of these themes offers a different perspective on your stay.

Thermal History and Architecture

The historical roots of the Termas do Gerês date back to Roman times. However, the first thermal bathing facility was not built until the early 18th century. A later development is the Colunata Honório de Lima in Vila do Gerês, built in 1926 to a design by architect Raul Lino (1879–1974). The Colunata is home to the Buvete, also known as Bica, where visitors can drink the thermal water. This gives you a way to distinguish between the long history of thermal bathing, 20th-century architecture and the use of thermal water.

Facilities at the Termas do Gerês include a thermal bath with a heated swimming pool, a gym, massages and thermal beauty programmes. Facilities and programmes may change, so check the current offerings before your visit. Alongside the historical interest, these specific wellness options can also help shape your trip plans.

Viewpoints and How to Reach Them

Mirante Velho is accessible by car via the M-533, which connects Campo do Gerês with Vila do Gerês. Access to the Fraga Negra viewpoint is described as a walk from the M-533; it is 0.5 km from the road. This makes a practical difference when planning: access by car is specified for Mirante Velho, while Fraga Negra involves a walk from the road. This viewpoint also has a history: the forestry services established it in 1962, primarily at the initiative of Dr. Manuel Braga da Cruz.

Waterfall, Pastureland and Forest

Cascata do Arado is a waterfall on the River Arado, in the heart of the Gerês area. It lies about 3 km from the village of Ermida and about 8 km from Vila do Gerês. Both distances are approximate and refer to different places. In the mountains of the Serra do Gerês, you can watch Garrano horses and Barrosã cattle grazing. The Serra’s wooded areas include oak, holly, azereiro, birch, pine, strawberry tree and yew. These details show different sides of the natural landscape: the waterfall and river, the pastureland and the diversity of tree species.

Trails and Cultural Connections

The shortest option on the PR10 – Trilho da Preguiça follows the banks of the River Gerês. By contrast, the PR3 – Trilho dos Currais focuses on direct contact with local communal traditions, particularly the silvopastoral system known as Vezeira. It is practised in the Serra do Gerês from May to September. The two trails can therefore be distinguished by a specific feature: one follows the riverbank, while the other offers a connection to a local seasonal tradition.

A legend is associated with Penedo da Freira in Zanganho. According to the story, towards the end of the 18th century, a nun from a monastery in Porto probably hid there with her lover, who was presumably a young Castilian knight. Another historical connection is the Geira: built under the Flavian dynasty of the Roman Empire, this road linked Braga with Astorga and runs for about 30 km through the municipality of Terras de Bouro.

Putting Gerês in Perspective for Trip Planning

The wider landscape offers another perspective. Together, Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês and Parque Natural da Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés make up the cross-border Gerês-Xurés Park, established in 1997. The national park is notable for its rich natural and cultural heritage, as well as largely natural ecosystems in an impressive landscape that has been little or not at all affected by human activity.

When looking for a holiday rental in Gerês, it can help to decide first which of these perspectives you want to shape your trip: thermal history and architecture, viewpoints, trails and traditions, or mountain nature.
