Vila Verde brings together church and local history, multi-day festivals, regional crafts and cultural activities. When considering the town as a destination, you can distinguish between enduring historical connections and events with their own annual rhythms.

Churches and the town’s development

The Igreja de São Paio de Vila Verde was built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. Its construction history thus reaches back to an earlier period in the town’s past. The Capela de Santo António is located in the centre of Vila Verde and has been venerated there since at least 1706.

The chapel’s history is also connected with the development of the townscape. Until almost the 20th century, the town centre did not develop significantly because of its proximity to Braga. In the 20th century, urban life shifted along the EN101 to an area away from the town centre, where the Capela de Santo António was already located. This sequence places the chapel’s location within the town’s transformation.

Festivals with different focuses

The Festas de Santo António in Vila Verde still take place over several days. The programme includes folklore performances, traditional games, exhibitions and horse races. The Marchas Populares are also part of the festival culture: they continue to be regarded as one of the most representative symbols of the celebrations.

The municipality of Vila Verde holds the Festa das Colheitas every year on the second weekend of October, also known as the Feira Mostra de Produtos Regionais. One of the event’s featured dishes is “Arroz de frango Pica no chão,” a chicken dish. This festival therefore brings together a focus on regional produce and a specifically named dish.

Embroidery craft and culinary tradition

The Lenços de Namorados are regarded as a defining symbol of the municipality of Vila Verde. According to a municipal description updated in April 2025, the embroiderers of Aliança Artesanal have been making reproductions of these traditional handkerchiefs for three decades. The municipality’s identity and the embroiderers’ work are two distinct aspects of the same craft tradition: one points to the importance of the Lenços de Namorados to Vila Verde, while the other highlights their reproduction by a named local team.

Festival cuisine is another way to experience the town’s culture. The dish “Arroz de frango Pica no chão” is a featured culinary highlight of the Festa das Colheitas. Together with the embroidery tradition, it shows that Vila Verde’s cultural profile is not limited to churches and festival days.

Cycling options and cultural programmes

Vila Verde has an urban cycling route. Another cycling option is BikeAmor, a shared e-bike system across the municipality of Vila Verde that is occasionally used by visitors and tourists.

Another cultural offering is aimed at children: the Biblioteca Municipal Professor Machado Vilela organises the annual reading promotion activity “História Andarilha.” This is distinct from the multi-day festival programmes and the craft tradition, adding a recurring library project to the cultural picture.

Planning a trip to Vila Verde

The two festivals offer different points of reference in the calendar: the Festa das Colheitas takes place every year on the second weekend of October, while the Festas de Santo António run for several days. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the specific event dates before booking. The town’s history, embroidery craft and cultural offerings may also be important interests when choosing a hotel in Vila Verde and planning your trip.
