Vila Verde lies at the confluence of the Homem and Cávado rivers. Riverside areas and river bathing spots sit alongside mountain areas with steep slopes, ridges and gorges. This offers different ways to plan your trip: hiking trails, water activities and cultural sites can each become the focus of your stay.
Hiking Trails and Landscapes
Three signposted hiking trails offer practical guidance when choosing a route. The Trilho de Aboim da Nóbrega is 12,156 metres long and passes through Cabo, Fonte Mulhe, Casais de Vide, Lameiras and Aboim. The Trilho do Fojo do Lobo e Nascente do Vade is 13,095 metres long; the route runs through Lameiras, Bemposta, Ameixoeira, Gondomar, Bezeguimbra and Póvoa Dura. The Trilho de Mixões da Serra – Valdreu is 13,035 metres long and passes through Mixões, Casal (Uveiras), Bezeguimbra and Posto Maior. The three routes are therefore less than a kilometre apart in length.
Described as a short tourist and cultural hiking trail, the Trilho do Fojo do Lobo combines mountain views with an old wolf trap. This trap was used to protect the population and livestock from wolf attacks. There are also hiking trails in the north of the municipality, ecopaths along the banks of the Homem and Cávado, and an urban cycle path in Vila Verde. This means that signposted individual routes and other types of paths offer different options.
Rivers and Water Activities
The Homem and Cávado offer good conditions for canoeing and sport fishing. At Clube Náutico de Prado, canoeing includes training, leisure and competition programmes. Vila Verde's Estação Náutica serves as a platform for promoting water tourism based on local water resources.
Praia Fluvial do Faial is another river bathing spot. Praia Fluvial do Faial has bathing aids and facilities for people with reduced mobility. Before a future visit, check whether these facilities are available. The river landscape is therefore more than just a backdrop for trails: canoeing, sport fishing and spending time at a river bathing spot each offer a distinct experience.
Bridge, Ceramics and Cultural Heritage
Ponte do Prado spans the Cávado and is classified as a National Monument. In the Middle Ages, it was an important crossing in the Entre-Douro-e-Minho landscape and lay on the route connecting Braga and Ponte de Lima. Its status as a protected monument and its former role as a crossing offer two different perspectives on the structure: its present-day protection status and its historical importance in linking the two places.
In Vila de Prado, the Centro Interpretativo do Artesanato em Cerâmica is housed in a former building of the Paços do Concelho de Prado. The building probably dates from the 17th century. At the centre, visitors learn about the traditional “Loiças de Prado” ceramics and their distinctive features; the centre also invites visitors to work with clay on a potter's wheel. The Lenços de Namorados are also part of Vila Verde's characteristic handicrafts. These linen or cotton cloths are embroidered with love messages.
The Centro Interpretativo do PatrimĂłnio Cultural is located in the Albergue de Peregrinos S. Pedro de GoĂŁes. Its exhibition themes include the history of Vila Verde, festivals and pilgrimages, handicrafts, gastronomy and cultural events. The section of the Caminho de Santiago through Terras de Vila Verde is also shown on exhibition panels. Visits are possible by prior appointment; arrange your visit in advance.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
The Festa de Santo AntĂłnio in Vila Verde is still celebrated and lasts several days. The programme includes a procession, folklore, music, traditional games and horse races. The Romaria de Nossa Senhora do AlĂvio takes place on the second and third Sundays in September, with processions playing a central role. The celebration programmes for 2024 and 2025 also included a night-time candlelit procession from the sanctuary to the parish church of Soutelo. At the Santuário de Mixões da Serra, the BĂŞnção dos animais is a tradition; at a celebration in 2023, a procession in honour of Santo AntĂłnio followed the blessing.
Cultural programmes also shape Vila Verde. The “Fevereiro – Mês do Romance” programme lasts 28 days and puts the Lenços de Namorados at its centre. October is associated with the Festa das Colheitas. Check the dates of the relevant festival programme if you would like to plan your trip around an event.
Traditional Minho cuisine includes Rojões à moda do Minho; the dessert Pudim Abade de Priscos is also part of the region's gastronomic heritage. Vinho Verde is produced on the slopes of Vila Verde.
