The Igreja de São Martinho in Soengas combines a rectangular nave and a rectangular chancel, built from regularly laid granite masonry, with a richly sculpted, gilded frame around the triumphal arch. Other notable buildings include the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Abadia and the Casa dos Barbosas, which stands out for its fine architectural design. Soengas brings together distinctive features of sacred architecture and building design with a local history documented in records since 1043.
Sacred Architecture in Soengas
At the Igreja de São Martinho, the layout can be distinguished from the furnishings. The nave is the church’s main space, while the chancel is the area associated with the altar. Both are rectangular and built from regularly laid granite masonry. The frame around the triumphal arch is richly sculpted and gilded; painted wooden altarpieces are located at the side altars and the high altar. An altarpiece is a decorative structure behind or above an altar. The gilded frame and painted woodwork are therefore distinct elements alongside the architectural layout.
At the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Abadia, the features are divided between the façade and the interior furnishings. The façade apparently shows Mannerist and Baroque influences. Inside are a small polychrome altarpiece and a carved wooden pulpit. Polychrome means multicoloured; the pulpit adds a carved wooden element to the furnishings. The two religious buildings can therefore be compared through different aspects: at São Martinho, the focus is on the layout and altar works, while at the Capela it is on the façade and interior furnishings.
The Casa dos Barbosas is also an architectural landmark in Soengas. Its fine architectural design is noteworthy. Together with the two religious buildings, it broadens the architectural theme to include another named structure.
Local History and Geographical Orientation
Soengas has been documented in records since 1043. The place belonged to the historic Terra de Penafiel de Soaz and formerly to the Município de Ribeira de Soás. In 1515, King Manuel I granted this município a charter. The dates refer to different historical facts: 1043 marks the documentary mention of Soengas, while 1515 refers to the charter granted to the former município. The historic terra and the former município also represent two distinct territorial reference points in the history of the place.
For geographical context, Soengas is located near the left bank of the Cávado and 8 km west-northwest of the municipal seat. When using a map for orientation, you can consider these two references separately: one describes the location in relation to the river, while the other gives the direction and distance from the municipal seat.
Festivals and Pilgrimages
The Festas and Romarias listed for Soengas include S. Martinho on 11 November and Senhora do Socorro on the third Sunday in June.
