Carvalheira can be explored through several distinct themes: the route of a Roman road, the PR15 hiking trail and religious buildings. The landscape along the Homem and Ribeira Rodas waterways, along with the São Paio festivities in June, completes the picture. When planning, it is worth choosing a priority first: hiking, cultural heritage or festival season will lead to different considerations when planning your stay and choosing a hotel.

The Roman Road and Bom Jesus das Mós

The Via XVIII/Geira, also known as the Via Nova or Via XVIII of the Itinerarium Antonini, is a Roman road classified as a National Monument. Its section in the municipality of Terras de Bouro passes through Carvalheira. Via Nova and Via XVIII are other names for the same road.

Construction of the Bom Jesus das Mós monument began in 1902; it was solemnly inaugurated on 13 July 1913. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and resembles a medieval castle tower built on a rocky outcrop. This monument therefore brings together a precisely dated construction history, a religious dedication and a form reminiscent of a castle.

For decades, the original monument served as a viewpoint overlooking the valley of the Homem River. A new viewpoint with a metal and glass structure has also been built.

Churches, Chapels and Paredes

The Igreja Matriz de Carvalheira is dedicated to São Paio. Its main chapel is tiled, and the interior is decorated with paintings. Its dedication and design give the parish church distinct architectural and religious associations.

The Ermida de São Caetano dates from 1590; a chapel dedicated to the Heart of Mary stands on Alto das Mós. Together, a historic building with a specific date and a chapel with a named location and dedication represent different aspects of the area’s religious heritage.

Paredes is a traditional village and part of Carvalheira’s historical and cultural heritage. Alongside individual religious buildings, the village and its history are cultural themes that can shape a stay.

Hiking and Landscape

The PR15 Bom Jesus do Monte das Mós hiking trail connects Campo do Gerês, Covide and Carvalheira. Its name highlights the monument, while the three connected places explain the route’s geographical context. These place names provide a practical reference when planning your hike.

Ponte Porta Santo is located on the Ribeira Rodas stream, on the boundary between the parishes of Carvalheira and Covide. The Poço Macho pool is also there. Its position on the parish boundary places it within both of the named areas.

The slopes of Carvalheira extend along the left bank of the Homem River and to the right of the Ribeira Rodas; pastures and oak trees characterize them. The two waterways provide clear geographical orientation, while the vegetation adds another distinct feature to the landscape.

When to Visit and Hotel Planning

The São Paio festivities take place in June. If you are travelling for them, check the exact festival dates in advance and plan your stay around them.

When looking for a hotel in Carvalheira, your reason for travelling can help guide your first decision: the PR15 is a focus for hiking, the Roman road and religious buildings are part of the cultural heritage, and São Paio gives your trip a June focus. First decide which of these themes you would like to spend time on; you can then plan your stay accordingly.
