Revelhe can be explored through two distinct highlights: the Albufeira da Barragem da Queimadela, with its river beach, and the Rota dos Tanques e das Tachas, which passes through several places. At the reservoir, the focus is on the water and beach; along the hiking route, you’ll encounter local traditions, village washhouses and historic sites. You can tailor your stay depending on whether you’d prefer to focus on a visit to the water or a hike with insights into local history.
Reservoir, river beach and time by the water
The Albufeira da Barragem da Queimadela is part of the Revelhe area. The reservoir covers 11 hectares and is fed by the Vizela River. At Praia Fluvial da Barragem da Queimadela, there is free, designated parking and an accessible path to the beach. Before your visit, check whether the current access arrangements meet your needs.
The municipality states that the Albufeira has held the Blue Flag since 2021; check its status for the season of your visit. There is also a campsite and caravan park near the reservoir. If you are considering this type of accommodation, enquire in advance about the current facilities.
The Rota dos Tanques e das Tachas
The Rota dos Tanques e das Tachas follows agricultural and forestry tracks through several places in Revelhe. Each of these places has a distinctive washhouse. The route is approximately 11.9 kilometres long; check the route details locally before setting off.
The climb to Penedo da Pegadinha leads to the highest point on the route. On the descent, you can see the waterfall at the dam and the Vizela River. The route also leads to Igreja Paroquial de Santa Eulalia, on the village’s oldest street. The trail therefore brings together scenery, local points of interest and a direct insight into local history.
Washhouses, traditions and local history
The washhouses along the route were once used exclusively by women to wash their clothes. They hold great social and historical value for the municipality and the local community. Tachas are also connected with Revelhe’s history: this distinctive item was used to fasten wooden clogs. The route’s name thus brings together two local features—the washhouses in the villages and the tachas. Together, they connect the hike with past everyday practices and their importance to the community.
A fortified settlement is thought to have been built on Monte do Crasto; fragments of smooth and coarse pottery point to this. Another aspect of the area’s history concerns scouting: according to Fafe Municipality, Revelhe is considered a pioneer in the introduction of scouting in the Município de Fafe. The church on the village’s oldest street, the pottery fragments and the local traditions therefore offer different ways to learn about the area’s history alongside its scenery.
The Festa do Senhor takes place every year on the second Sunday in August. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with the festival, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.
