The historic centre of Guimarães and the Couros area form an exceptionally well-preserved urban landscape. They illustrate the development of certain architectural types from the medieval settlement to the present-day city, particularly between the 15th and 19th centuries. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Exploring Guimaraes means encountering not only individual buildings, but also the different eras that have left their mark on the cityscape.

Buildings from Different Centuries

The Citânia de Briteiros is located on Monte de São Romão in the municipality of Guimarães and is classified as a National Monument. The Paço dos Duques de Bragança, an aristocratic palace dating from the 15th century, offers a glimpse into a different architectural era. Its collections include tapestries, porcelain, paintings, furniture, sculptures and weapons. The Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo was built in the 13th century, specifically during its first three decades. A nationalistically oriented historiographical tradition also associates it with the baptism of D. Afonso Henriques; this association should be understood as a tradition. The Palácio Vila Flor dates from the 18th century. Gardens surround the building and offer privileged views of the city of Guimarães. Together, these buildings span a broad period of time, while there is more to discover than just palaces and churches.

Stories, Collections and Crafts

The Museu de Alberto Sampaio houses one of the most valuable collections of sacred artworks in Portugal. The CIAJG brings objects from different eras, places and contexts into dialogue with works by contemporary artists. Guimaraes thus offers different ways of engaging with history and art: sacred artworks in one setting, and historical objects paired with contemporary art in another.

The exhibition at the Casa da Memória tells the story of the Guimarães community through images, stories, documents and objects. Its themes range from prehistory and the founding of Portugal to rural societies and festivals, the industrialisation of the Vale do Ave and the present day. Guided tours are available throughout the year by prior appointment and are adapted to each visitor group. Creative workshops in pottery, ceramics, embroidery, textile printing and cooking are also offered.

Embroidery can also be explored hands-on: it uses six colours—red, blue, beige, grey, white and black—along with stylised motifs and twenty-one stitches. At the Oficina de Bordado de Guimarães, participants learn the technique, make their own embroidered piece and take it home as a personal souvenir. The Festas Nicolinas are student celebrations in honour of Saint Nicholas of Myra; their first documented mention dates to 1664. The Festas da Cidade e Gualterianas, meanwhile, have a centuries-old tradition. These cultural events offer a glimpse into different forms of local customs.

Experiences from the Kitchen to Penha

Those interested in food will find several hands-on experiences. The Oficina do Sabor at Paladário de Guimarães is a group cooking experience with the chefs, ending with a tasting. A wine tasting at Quinta dos Encados includes a selection of regional cheeses, toast and bread; the experience also includes a tour of the quinta. Both activities combine tasting with another activity rather than being limited to a tasting alone.

Ten habitats protected under Portuguese law have been identified on Montanha da Penha. The Rota da Biodiversidade da Penha is a linear walking trail of about four kilometres with eleven information boards. For a different way to enjoy green spaces, Parque de Lazer da Cidade covers approximately 20 hectares and has a lake, the Ribeira de Couros watercourse, fitness trails with exercise equipment and a cycle path. These descriptions refer to different nature and recreation options; they should not be combined into a single route.

The Caminho de Torres connects Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela along a 600-kilometre route and passes through the UNESCO World Heritage site in the historic centre of Guimarães. Afonso 360 offers another historical experience: this virtual reality experience focuses on the Battle of São Mamede and is available at Castelo de Guimarães and next to the Paço dos Duques de Bragança. As availability may change, it is advisable to check before visiting.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Direct and indirect train connections between Guimaraes and Porto make the journey in approximately 60 minutes. Check the timetable before travelling. Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is about 40 minutes from Guimaraes. These approximate journey times offer an initial guide for planning; they do not replace checking the specific travel connection.
