A pointed-arch portal makes a striking impression in Geraz do Minho: it belongs to Casa da Costa and is crowned by the coat of arms of Francisco da Costa, which is associated with the year 1571. Francisco da Costa was lord of Quinta da Costa and a nobleman of the royal household. Casa da Costa is a two-storey building with a U-shaped floor plan and a distinctive portal. The portal, coat of arms and architectural form make the house a tangible gateway to the town’s architectural history.

Architectural history between manor house and tower

Casa da Costa is thought to have been founded sometime between the final years of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 17th century. This dating remains an assumption; alongside it is the year 1571 associated with the coat of arms. The details refer to different points in time: a presumed founding period and a year associated with the coat of arms. In addition, Casa da Costa is classified as an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico (IIP), or Property of Public Interest. Its architectural form, historical classification and designation complement one another without amounting to a single founding date.

The Torre de Geraz do Minho offers a different point of reference in time. It dates from the 13th century and was added to the manor house in the 18th century. Its history therefore stretches from a medieval origin to a much later architectural addition. By comparison, the estimated founding period of Casa da Costa falls in the early centuries of the modern era. Those interested in historic architecture will therefore find different time periods represented here, rather than just a single date.

Archaeological traces and rural architecture

The archaeological sites offer another perspective on the history of Geraz do Minho. The Infesta/Burgo/Torre site is identified as an area of Roman settlement and classified under Romanization in the archaeological inventory. Castro de Santo Tirso is also one of the archaeological hill forts of Geraz do Minho. The historical topics covered therefore range from manor house and tower to archaeological sites and hill forts.

At Casa de SĂŁo Vicente, the focus shifts to the history of rural architecture and work. It is a farmhouse typical of Minho architecture, once owned by a prosperous farmer; several outbuildings served different agricultural activities. Vinho Verde is produced at Casa de SĂŁo Vicente. The farmhouse, outbuildings and wine production give this place a different focus from the manor house architecture of Casa da Costa. Casa de SĂŁo Vicente has been converted into rural tourism accommodation. If you are considering staying here, check current availability before making plans.

Casa de SĂŁo Vicente also has a chapel, built in 1623, with an altarpiece from the same period. The precisely dated altarpiece adds another architectural detail to the picture of the complex. Together with the agricultural outbuildings, it shows how different aspects of a place can tell stories about architecture, faith and work at the same time.

Religious heritage and festival dates

The religious heritage of Geraz do Minho includes the Capela de Santo António. The Igreja Paroquial de Geraz (Santo Estevão) is the town’s parish church, dedicated to Saint Stephen. The local festival calendar lists Santo António on 22 August, Nossa Senhora do Rosário on 15 May and Santo Estevão on 26 November for Geraz do Minho. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festival dates, check the dates in advance.

Geraz do Minho therefore offers several different ways to explore the area: the architectural history of Casa da Costa and the tower, archaeological place names, the rural architecture of Casa de SĂŁo Vicente, and religious heritage and festival dates. Which of these shapes your visit depends on whether you are especially interested in buildings, early settlement, wine growing or religious traditions.
