Rally cars, historic printing presses and a reservoir with a river beach offer very different discoveries in Fafe. Palatial houses in the Brazilian style also shape the town’s urban character. When planning a trip, you can focus separately on culture and landscapes: the museums tell stories of motorsport, migration and local history, while cycling and hiking trails and the area around the Albufeira da Queimadela offer more opportunities outdoors.

Outdoors: cycling route, hiking trails and water

The shared Pista de Cicloturismo is 15.4 kilometres long in total. Of this, 8.3 kilometres run through the municipality of Fafe and 7.1 kilometres through the municipality of GuimarĂŁes. On the Pista, cyclists have right of way at intersections with crossing roads. This makes the route different from the hiking options described for the municipality of Fafe: there are more than a dozen marked PR hiking trails there, with several levels of difficulty.

One longer hiking option is the Grande Rota do Património e do Ambiente das Terras Altas de Fafe. This circular long-distance trail of the Grande Rota (GR) type is 50 kilometres long and divided into three stages: from Várzea Cova to Mós, from Mós to Pontido, and from Pontido back to Várzea Cova. The three sections give the tour a clear sequence; its total length and circular route make it easy to plan as a trip in its own right.

Another landscape highlight is the Albufeira da Queimadela. The reservoir covers 11 hectares and contains water from the Vizela River. There is a river beach and picnic areas nearby, as well as opportunities for environmentally friendly water sports. This natural area offers a range of leisure activities, from spending time at the river beach to taking part in activities on the water.

Museums, motorsport and local history

The Museu do Rali is dedicated to motorsport, with an exhibition of 25 rally cars. Its collection also includes racing suits, helmets and miniatures, as well as motorsport magazines, posters and notices about drivers and brands. The cars and accompanying collection items offer different perspectives on rallying: vehicles are displayed alongside equipment and printed materials.

Fafe’s printing history can also be traced through specific objects. The Museu da Imprensa de Fafe preserves equipment used to produce, print and finish the former local newspapers “O Desforço” and “Almanaque Ilustrado de Fafe”, founded in 1892 and 1909, respectively. The collection also includes printing engravings. A printing press dating from 1885 and other machines illustrate the shift in typographic work from manual to mechanical typesetting.

The Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades explores Portuguese emigration in different periods: to Brazil in the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, and to European countries in the second half of the 20th century. Together with the palatial houses in the Brazilian style built by returning emigrants, this theme offers a perspective on migration and its traces in the townscape. The Estação Memória complements the cultural offering as an interpretive museum about Fafe’s history, traditions and nature.

Another striking building is the fully restored Teatro Cinema de Fafe. It is considered an architectural attraction and a cultural landmark of the town; its history dates back to 1923. A cultural stay can therefore bring together several distinct themes: a historic theatre, museums with clearly defined collections, and architecture woven into the townscape.
