Moreira do Rei lies on the left bank of the Vizela River. Hikers can explore trails through Moreira do Rei and Várzea Cova, as well as circular routes in the surrounding União de Freguesias. Other points of interest include the historical connection to the Couto de Moraria, the chapel in Marinhão and the rock architecture of Casa do Penedo. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on hiking, landscapes or local history.

Hiking Trails by Route and Distance

The hiking options in the União de Freguesias de Moreira do Rei e Várzea Cova area include the PR5 “Rota dos Espigueiros.” This 12-kilometre circular route is of moderate difficulty and runs between Bastelo and Várzea Cova. Numerous espigueiros can be seen along the way.

The PR10 “Trilho do Vento” is another circular route of moderate difficulty in the União de Freguesias area. It is 14 kilometres long and starts and ends at the substation of the Terras Altas de Fafe wind farm. This makes comparison with the PR5 straightforward: both are circular routes of moderate difficulty, but the PR10 is two kilometres longer.

The PR6 “Levadas de Pardelhas” offers a different connection with the landscape. It passes through Moreira do Rei and Várzea Cova and follows the Ribeira de Moreira. While the PR5 and PR10 are described as circular routes, the PR6 is defined by its route through the two villages and along the stream.

Riverside Location and Local History

The Couto de Moraria is a clear historical landmark for the area: around 1180, D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, granted it a charter (foral). Alongside the hiking trails, this provides a tangible connection to the village’s medieval history.

A Mass is currently celebrated every Friday in the chapel in the hamlet of MarinhĂŁo. This offers a different perspective from the historical record of the Couto: it reflects the present-day religious use of a place within the municipality.

Casa do Penedo and Its Distinctive Architecture

Casa do Penedo is located in the Serras de Fafe, in the União de Freguesias de Várzea Cova e Moreira do Rei. The house was built between four enormous boulders, which form part of its structure. The rocks are therefore not merely a backdrop to the building, but are incorporated into its construction.

A guided tour includes both the exterior and interior of the house. Casa do Penedo also offers a mountain experience, with its pool built on the rocks and views of the Fafe mountains. The only access to Casa do Penedo is via the rally track on the Fafe–Lameirinha section. Check access before your visit.

Local Cuisine and Picnics

Restaurants in Moreira do Rei serve traditional Minho cuisine prepared with local produce. A picnic area is set in an imposing oak grove and has several tables and benches, barbecues, a public water tank with fresh water and a stage. These provide different options for a meal: restaurants serving regional cuisine and a picnic area with the facilities listed above.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your trip around the things that matter most to you. The hiking routes offer clear points of comparison in terms of circular format, distance and difficulty; the foral provides a historical perspective, while a Mass is currently celebrated every Friday in the chapel in the hamlet of MarinhĂŁo; Casa do Penedo, meanwhile, stands out for its architecture integrated into the rocks.
