Apúlia can be planned from several angles: the large sandy beach at Praia da Apúlia, the cultural heritage of the windmills, and nature observation along the PR12 – Trilho das Masseiras. Each of these themes offers a distinct focus: a protected coastal landscape, a historic building type, and an observation tower overlooking Lagoa de Apúlia. Before your trip, you can decide whether you want to focus on the beach, culture or nature observation.
Praia da Apúlia: Beach and Activities
Praia da Apúlia is located in the protected Área de Paisagem Protegida do Litoral de Esposende and has a large sandy beach. Sports and leisure activities at the beach include windsurfing, kitesurfing and sport fishing; availability may vary by season. If any of these activities are important to your trip, check what is available for your travel dates. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the beach as a scenic destination from choosing a specific activity: the sandy expanse defines the landscape, while planning for sports activities should depend on your travel dates.
Windmills and Cultural Heritage
The Moinhos de Vento de Apúlia have been documented in local place names since the mid-18th century. They are built from granite and schist and have a circular floor plan and a conical shape. This design was intended to make the best possible use of the available wind. The windmills have lost their original function. Their materials, layout and shape explain their technical design, while the loss of their original function adds a historical perspective. For those interested in culture, they bring together distinctive architecture and the transformation of an original use. The windmills thus represent a cultural heritage theme in its own right, alongside the beach and nature observation.
PR12 – Trilho das Masseiras
The PR12 – Trilho das Masseiras starts in front of the windmills of Apúlia and includes an observation tower overlooking Lagoa de Apúlia. From there, you can observe various animal and plant species. The trail thus connects its starting point in front of the windmills with a specific nature observation spot. If you want to include both culture and nature on the same route, you will find two distinct points of interest here. Unlike Praia da Apúlia, the PR12 focuses not on the sports activities mentioned there, but on the observation tower and the observation of different species.
Museu do Sargaço
The Museu do Sargaço preserves the memory of Apúlia’s tradition of collecting sargassum. The distinction is clear when choosing a cultural focus: the windmills represent construction and the former use of wind power, while the museum commemorates a local gathering tradition. Following the renovation of the former primary school in Areia, the museum was inaugurated on 23 April. It is located at Rua Fonte da Senhora da Guia 6, 4740-061 Apúlia. Opening hours may change; if you plan to visit the museum, check current visiting arrangements beforehand.
