Routes and Choosing a Route

Two route options in Cepães can be compared based on their specific features. The PR 9 “Rota do Milénio” is a 9.5-kilometre circular route that starts and ends at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. Starting and finishing at the same chapel makes the circular route easy to understand and gives it a fixed point of reference. The PR 9.1 “Rotinha do Milénio” is a variant of the PR 9; the two names are therefore related, but refer to different route options.

The PR 9.1 “Rotinha do Milénio” is a marked walking trail on a short route that you can walk in either direction. Its landscape is defined by green fields, vineyards and babbling waters. The PR 9 “Rota do Milénio” is a 9.5-kilometre circular route; the PR 9.1 “Rotinha do Milénio” is a variant of the PR 9. If you want to base your route planning on a specific distance, you can use the 9.5 kilometres of the PR 9 as a guide; the circular route starts and ends at the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe.

Archaeological and Sacred Traces

The archaeological remains in Cepães include two named sites: Castro da Retortinha and Penedo do Santo Entrudo. The Castro is also called Povoado; this name therefore does not refer to a third site.

The parish church and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe also share a history of construction: the Benedictine monks of Pombeiro played a major role in building both religious structures. The chapel is also the starting and finishing point of the PR 9, so it plays a role in two aspects of local history: as a reference point for the circular route and as a religious building. The Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe Museum – Espaço de Memórias de S. Mamede de Cepães is located in a building adjoining the parish church. If you plan to visit the museum, check its current opening hours in advance.

Mills and the History of Religious Festivities

The Moinho de Água de Cepães adds a different cultural and historical focus. It is one of the traditional mills in the municipality of Fafe whose high cultural and historical value is highlighted. Thus, alongside archaeological remains and religious buildings, the milling tradition also emerges as a theme in regional history. If you plan to visit the mill, check visiting options in advance. The Ponte do Prego is also described as a centuries-old witness.

The festivities in honour of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe were held in 2014 and described as the most important religious celebration in the parish of Cepães, in the municipality of Fafe. If you want to plan your stay around an event, check the dates for your travel period.
