Braga offers several perspectives on its history: Portugal’s oldest cathedral, a pre-Roman rock sanctuary, and Roman residential and religious sites reveal different chapters. Viewpoints and leisure activities offer other highlights. When planning your trip, you can decide whether architecture, archaeology, panoramas, or active pursuits should take centre stage.

Cathedral and archaeological heritage

The Sé Primacial de Braga is Portugal’s oldest cathedral. Its façades and exterior walls combine Romanesque and Gothic elements with an interior that is predominantly Baroque. Different styles are thus found side by side on the outside and inside, rather than forming a uniform appearance. This contrast makes the cathedral a striking starting point for exploring Braga’s architectural history.

A different perspective on the past awaits at Fonte do ĂŤdolo, a pre-Roman rock sanctuary in the historic centre. It was monumentalised during Roman times. Two figures carved in relief and Latin inscriptions name Nabia and Tongoenabiago as the deities worshipped there. The site therefore combines a pre-Roman origin with Roman-era design; the reliefs and inscriptions give the worshipped deities specific names.

Domus da Escola Velha da SĂ© also preserves evidence of Roman domestic life: the remains of a house in the Italic tradition. Most of the visible structures were created through alterations and remodelling between the 2nd and 5th centuries. Visitors can see private rooms, including Roman bath rooms heated by a hypocaust system. This offers a tangible insight into both the form of the dwelling and the technical design of its bath rooms.

Museu de Arqueologia D. Diogo de Sousa is the most important archaeological museum in the city and region. Another aspect of Roman construction can be seen at the Roman Theatre of Alto da Cividade: it was built at the same time as the baths and was used mainly for dramatic performances and public ceremonies. The thermal complex of Termas Romanas do Alto da Cividade was built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD. The theatre and baths thus represent different uses, from performances to bathing.

World Heritage, leisure activities and views

Bom Jesus do Monte has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. Its staircase has more than 500 steps, lined with fountains and Baroque statues. The sanctuary’s leisure park offers boat rides on an artificial lake. If you would like to plan this activity, check its availability in advance.

There are different perspectives to enjoy, too: Miradouro do Picoto offers a striking view across the urban area of Braga. At 572 m, the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro stands at the city’s highest point and offers views of the Serras do Gerês, da Cabreira, da Penha and da Franqueira. The vistas therefore range from the urban panorama to four named mountain ranges.

At Picoto Park, activities include tree climbing, mini golf, paintball, ziplining, target shooting, mountain biking and bumper ball. The range of activities is therefore very varied. As availability may change, check in advance which activities are offered during your travel dates.

Getting your bearings in the historic centre and on the Way of St James

Braga’s tourist train offers a guided way to visit the most important monuments, squares and emblematic streets of the historic centre. If you would like to use this way of getting your bearings, check the timetable in advance, as operating details may change.

The Central Portuguese Way of St James through Braga runs for approximately 19 km within the municipality and follows the route of the ancient Via Romana XIX for much of the way. This approximate distance refers to the route within the municipal area. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
