On the southern part of Monte de Airó in Bastuço S. João lies the Senhora da Boa Fé viewpoint; from there, the view stretches across the Vale do Este. Monte de Airó is one of the panoramic hills designated by Barcelos and includes, among other places, Bastuço S. João. The perspective therefore ranges from the clearly identified viewpoint to the wider landscape. The panoramic hills of Barcelos as a whole also offer viewpoints over the surrounding region.
Monte de Airó: Views and the Literary Walking Route
The green route of the literary walking trail “O Sargento-Mor de Vilar” runs through the section of Monte de Airó in Bastuço S. João. A municipal post from April 2011 gives the green route’s length as six kilometres and its estimated walking time as 2.5 hours. Length and walking time describe different measures: the first figure indicates the distance, while the second gives the estimated time on foot. Confirm these details locally before planning, as they come from that post. The trail network includes rural roads, footpaths, and agricultural and forestry tracks. In this way, the route description combines specific information about time and distance with a description of the types of paths.
A report from April 2011 also describes a walk along part of the trail; the route led to the ruins of the former Senhora da Boa-Fé chapel in Bastuço S. João. The name Senhora da Boa Fé thus appears in two contexts: as a viewpoint overlooking the Vale do Este and as the name of the former chapel, whose ruins are linked to the walk in the historical report.
Chapels, a Stone Cross, and Local History
The Capela de São Silvestre was founded in the 15th century by Joanne “O Pobre”. The Quinta do Sourinho is located in the parish of Santo Estêvão de Bastuço.
The Cruzeiro de Santo Estêvão de Bastuço is a religious wayside cross dating from the 18th century. Sculptures of Christ and Nossa Senhora are found on its opposite sides; the inscription “JULIÃO / FRCº e I7I8” appears on the base. The chapel focuses on its founder and founding date, while the Cruzeiro highlights its date, the figures depicted, and the inscription. These different details offer two specific ways of exploring local history.
Which focus suits your stay?
When looking for a holiday apartment in Bastuço, you can start by considering what you would like your stay to focus on: the landscape views from Monte de Airó, the literary walking route with its stated distance and walking time, or the historical landmarks. These focus areas answer different planning questions: the viewpoint identifies a specific vista, the walking route provides a time and distance framework, and the chapel and wayside cross offer dated historical details.
