Abadim stretches across one of the slopes of the Serra da Cabreira. The northern part reaches considerable heights, while the Rio Peio runs through a deep, damp and fertile valley. Those interested in the landscape and culture will find a range of points of interest here: hiking trails, the history of the mills and traditions that remain part of the local scene today.

Hiking trails along waterways and mountain slopes

The Trilho da Levada de Víbora starts beside the Oural Dam in the municipality of Abadim, in Cabeceiras de Basto, and is approximately 10.3 km long. It follows the levada, an old irrigation system that was once essential for powering the Moinhos de Rei. The Levada da Víbora feeds the Moinhos de Rei mill complex. This is a group of mills in Abadim built under King D. Dinis. The route therefore brings together a specific hiking trail and the historic water infrastructure of the mills.

The Trilho de Torrinheiras starts in Torrinheiras, in Abadim, and leads to the summit of Monte das Torrinheiras, at an altitude of 1,159 m. The trail offers 360-degree views of Gerês, Alvão, Marão and Barroso. The two trails have different highlights: on the Levada de Víbora, the route along the old irrigation system and the approximate distance provide orientation; on the Trilho de Torrinheiras, the named summit and the panorama take centre stage.

Around the Oural Reservoir and the Rio Peio

The trails around the Oural Reservoir offer an opportunity for mountain biking. The Área de Lazer do Oural has several tables and benches for picnics. Together, these provide other ways to experience the area, complementing the hiking options without making the same kind of outing the focus.

The Zona de Banhos da Ranha is located on the Rio Peio in Abadim and is an area for water sports. The bathing area is unsupervised and is not classified as a river beach. This information is relevant when planning a visit to the water and distinguishes Ranha from a supervised facility or one classified as a river beach.

Bread, nature and local traditions

Casa do Pão recreates the traditional breadmaking cycle and exhibits breadmaking equipment. During group visits booked in advance, you can watch bread being made and taste it. This combines an introduction to the craft with a first-hand look at the production process—a different way to discover Abadim’s traditions than following trails through the countryside.

At the Núcleo Interpretativo de Vida Selvagem (NIVS), visitors can learn about the biodiversity of the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto, particularly the wildlife and plant life of the Serra da Cabreira. The NIVS also preserves and maintains the customs and traditions of Terra de Basto. Nature and cultural heritage sit side by side, rather than limiting the visit to a single theme.

Church, pillory and archaeological heritage

The Igreja de São Jorge de Abadim is a modern-era religious building of great cultural value. Three architectural features are noted on the Pelourinho de Abadim: a column with a circular cross-section, a four-sided capital and a conical finial. These clearly distinct forms give the structure a distinctive profile among the historic landmarks of the village.

The archaeological complex of Marmoirais is also one of Abadim’s cultural attractions. It may date from the 2nd or 1st millennium BC. This possible dating provides a broad timeframe for the complex, while the church and pillory reveal other aspects of the area’s religious and architectural heritage.

Crafts and São Jorge

Traditional crafts in Abadim include weaving and patchwork quilts. The celebrations in honour of São Jorge are among its traditional festivals and pilgrimages. Those interested in local culture can consider these craft traditions and the festival alongside the area’s architectural and landscape attractions. The Miradouro de Porto d’Olho at Outeiro da Varela is another named location in Abadim that helps visitors get their bearings in the municipality.
