São Martinho das Amoreiras offers three clear starting points for a stay: sacred architectural history, the Iron Age site of Pardieiro, and hiking on a Rota Vicentina trail. This gives you a choice of different focuses: culture or outdoor activity. If you are looking for a holiday rental, first consider whether you want to make architectural history, archaeology, or the circular trail the starting point for your trip.
Sacred buildings from the 18th century
The Igreja Paroquial de S. Martinho das Amoreiras was built in the second half of the 18th century. The Oratório do Largo Adelino Amaro da Costa also dates from the 18th century and is a small popular oratory featuring vernacular religious architecture. Both buildings belong to the same century, but their dates are specified to different degrees: the church is dated to the second half of the century, while only the century is given for the oratory. “Vernacular” refers to a place-based, traditional building style; in the case of the oratory, this term adds an architectural perspective to its date. The church and the small oratory thus offer two different ways to understand the town’s religious architectural history.
Pardieiro: an Iron Age site
The Necropolis of Pardieiro is an Iron Age necropolis located beside the road connecting São Martinho das Amoreiras with Corte Malhão. It comprises eleven adjacent burial monuments with a subrectangular ground plan. The inscribed stele is associated with the Pardieiro site and the Museum of Southwestern Iberian Script in Almodôvar. Compared with the church and the oratory, the Iron Age represents a much earlier period. At Pardieiro, the focus is therefore on the archaeological context and the specific form of the monuments.
Hiking on the Rota Vicentina
The “S. Martinho das Amoreiras” circular trail is the Rota Vicentina’s furthest-inland route; its highest point is at Moinho da Serra. A description of the “São Martinho das Amoreiras” hiking trail published in 2021 gives the starting point as the village of the same name and lists two distances: 8 or 12.5 kilometres. The two distances offer a straightforward way to compare the length of the route. If planning based on this description, check the current trail signage and conditions before setting out.
