Casével combines a traditional pilgrimage with Cante culture and local history. The Romaria de São Miguel provides a seasonal focal point in May; the Monumento ao Cante Alentejano and the Igreja Matriz offer further perspectives on the town. This distinction is useful when planning: you can schedule your stay around the pilgrimage or focus more on architecture, music and history.

Romaria de São Miguel: May as a focal point

The traditional Romaria de São Miguel takes place in May in the parish of Casével, near Montes Gregórios. During the pilgrimage, the image is first taken to the Ermida de São Miguel, where a Eucharistic celebration is held. This is followed by a communal meal and musical entertainment. The programme thus includes both a religious element and a community event. If the May date influences your travel plans, check the specific event dates for your planned stay.

The Ermida de São Miguel is the setting for one of the largest pilgrimages in the municipality of Castro Verde. People travel in decorated carts from Castro Verde to the chapel. This shared procession gives the pilgrimage a tangible spatial dimension: the route to the destination is part of the tradition described, as is the destination itself.

Cante culture, architecture and sacred heritage

The Monumento ao Cante Alentejano stands on the EM535 at the roundabout at the entrance to Casével. It was erected as a tribute to the collective cultural heritage. Its location makes the monument a clear landmark at the entrance to the town; its dedication connects it with the communal significance of Cante Alentejano.

The Igreja Matriz de Casével is characterised by Baroque and Mannerist influences. These two art-historical classifications add an architectural dimension to the town's cultural profile alongside pilgrimage and Cante. Its sacred heritage also reaches far back: the Cabeça-Relicário de São Fabião is a sacred artefact from the 13th century that originates in Casével and is now kept outside the town.

The Associação de Cante Alentejano “Vozes das Terras Brancas” is associated with the groups “Vozes de Casével” and “Antigas Mondadeiras”. If you want to plan your trip specifically around an activity by one of these groups, confirm their current activities locally.

Local history and route planning

Casével was formerly a vila and the administrative seat of a concelho. On 20 September 1510, the town was granted a foral by D. Manuel I. Its former status, role as an administrative seat and the foral are part of its local history; the date gives this history a specific point in time.

The Rota EM535 – Rota da Aldeia Comunitária includes Casével as one of its three destinations. If you include this route in your plans, check its condition before setting out.
