The Farol das Contendas was inaugurated on 1 February 1934 at Ponta das Contendas. S. Sebastiao is also known for its protected coastal landscape, maritime fortifications and the history of Vila de São Sebastião. For your trip, you can choose between observing nature, exploring historic buildings and discovering cultural traditions.

Coastal Landscape and Nature at Ponta das Contendas

The protected area of Ponta das Contendas includes Baía de Mós and three small islets formed by marine erosion. Endemic Azorean plants grow on the slopes of the Ponta: Erica azorica, Spergularia azorica, Festuca petraea and Daucus carota azoricus. Vegetation is also a feature of the Fortes de São Sebastião hiking trail, which passes through a small woodland where the endemic Azorean heather Erica azorica is predominant.

Along this hiking trail, you can also spot roseate terns (Sterna dougallii), common terns (Sterna hirundo) and Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis). All three species breed in the protected landscape of Ponta das Contendas. For bird enthusiasts, this is a specific reason to explore the area’s natural side; the coastal landscape also includes the islets shaped by erosion and Baía de Mós.

Another coastal spot is Zona Balnear dos Salgueiros. A staircase leads down to the sea; there is also a natural swimming pool and a grassy area with picnic tables. Local conditions can vary seasonally, so it is advisable to check before visiting. At Baía da Corda, meanwhile, people fish with rods—a different connection to the sea from observing nature at Ponta das Contendas.

Forts and Trails Through History

The Fortes de São Sebastião hiking trail passes the remains of maritime defensive fortifications dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and ends in Vila de São Sebastião. The individual fortifications differ in their recorded histories and forms. Forte da Greta was built before 1580 to defend the small Baía de Santa Catarina das Mós against attacks by pirates and corsairs. Forte de Santa Catarina das Mós was built at the same time and for the same defensive purpose; however, the sea destroyed it, leaving only a few traces.

Forte do Pesqueiro dos Meninos has a different design: built before 1583, this triangular bastion has four embrasures facing the sea. Together with the remains of the fortifications along the hiking trail, it offers a way to explore the history of maritime defence, although the structures are not all in the same state of preservation. Ermida de Santa Ana lies on the final stretch of the trail, before the church square, and serves as another landmark along the route.

Local Life and Cultural Heritage

The sacristy of Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião houses three wooden panels from the second half of the 16th century. They depict episodes from the life of Saint Sebastian. In the centre of São Sebastião is also Império do Divino Espírito Santo de São Sebastião, founded in 1918. Between 1958 and 1965, it was moved to the south side of the church square and enhanced with floral decorations and elements representing the celebrations of the Holy Spirit. The festivities associated with the Império take place on Pentecost Sundays and Trinity Sundays.

Largo Terreiro da Fonte is also associated with a local tradition: touradas à corda are held there, with the Capinhas performing elegant passes. No event dates are provided here; however, the square’s connection with this tradition and the role of the Capinhas offer a specific glimpse into local cultural life. Vila de São Sebastião also has a surviving levada. Several watermills once operated there, and the remains of some can still be seen.

S. Sebastiao offers different reasons to choose it as a travel destination: its protected coast and birdlife, the history of its fortifications, or the traditions and buildings of Vila de São Sebastião. The hiking trail brings together nature and military history along its route and ends in the Vila.
