Several different themes can help you decide what to see in Velas: Geopark features and panoramas, religious art, a themed permanent exhibition and the history of fortifications. There is also a coastal dive site and the island connections served by Linda Verde. You can plan your stay around whether viewpoints and geology, cultural history or activities by the sea are your priority.

Viewpoints and Landscape

Canavial Viewpoint is a prominent geosite in the Azores Geopark, of national importance. Its profile includes scientific, educational and geotourism interest. This makes it interesting for travelers who want to consider a geosite from the perspective of geology and knowledge-sharing as well.

Velas Viewpoint offers a panorama of the town of Velas, as well as Pico and Faial. It is located in the Costa das Velas protected area, which is managed for the conservation of habitats or species. Both the views over the town and islands and its connection to the protected area are characteristic of this viewpoint.

The two places therefore appeal to different interests: at Canavial Viewpoint, the Geopark and its scientific, educational and geotourism significance take center stage; at Velas Viewpoint, the panorama and protected area are the specific points of interest. If you choose your stay around these themes, you can keep their respective characteristics in mind without treating the viewpoints as interchangeable.

Art, Exhibitions and Fortification History

The Velas Sacred Art Museum displays a large collection of religious statues. Casa Museu Cunha da Silveira offers a different thematic focus with its long-term exhibition, “O Mar e a Terra - Sustentabilidade de um Povo,” on permanent display. The exhibition title connects sea and land with the sustainability of a people; the museum’s collection, by contrast, is devoted to religious art.

Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora da Conceição has both a historical and a cultural dimension: construction work probably did not begin until 1644, and the Município de Velas revitalized the fortress as a cultural center and municipal auditorium. If you would like to combine a visit with a particular program, check current events, as the program may change.

Other historical points of interest are associated with different places and dates: the MisericĂłrdia Hospital in Velas was completed in 1708 and is associated with Beatriz de Melo. Forte da Ponta das Eiras ou Castelinho was built after the privateer Du Guay Trouin attacked Velas. The fort includes a tourist viewpoint that reuses the layout of the original fort. Here in particular, you can combine a look at history with a specific feature of the viewpoint.

Coast, Dive Site and Events

Gruta dos Corais is a coastal dive site, less than 100 meters offshore, opposite Vila das Velas. The site is suitable for introductory dives, night dives and snorkeling. These activities offer different ways to experience this coastal spot. Before planning an activity, check sea conditions and information from local operators.

Semana Cultural das Velas is also part of the cultural scene: its first edition was organized in 1988. If you would like to combine your trip with a possible event, check in advance whether an event falls within your travel dates.

Planning Island Connections

Atlânticoline’s Linda Verde connects Faial (Horta), Pico (São Roque and Madalena) and São Jorge (Velas). These connections may be relevant when planning a trip across several islands. As routes and schedules can change, check current departures before finalizing your travel plans.
