In Ribeira Cha, museums and local traditions come together with walking trails, viewpoints and Azorean cuisine. When planning your stay, you can choose between cultural insights and nature experiences—or combine both through the places and themes on offer.

Museums and Cultural Heritage

The Núcleo Museológico de Arte Sacra e Etnografia brings together sacred art and ethnographic themes. Among its notable exhibits is a painted wooden image of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda from the 16th century. The museum also includes a reconstruction of the high altar from the former São José Church. These two details offer different insights: the image is a specific work of art from the early modern period, while the reconstructed altar evokes the history of a former church building.

At the Quintal Etnográfico e de Endemismo Açórico, the flora of the Azores sits alongside traditional ways of life. Areas dedicated to Azorean endemic and medicinal plants are complemented by an agricultural museum and a wine museum. A nativity scene house, a craft house, and tents for traditional arts and crafts complete the ensemble. Visitors interested in the links between nature, craftsmanship and everyday life will find several different themes here, rather than a single exhibition.

The Casa Museu Maria dos Anjos Melo is located outside the ethnographic grounds. Donated by its owner, the house retains its original layout and presents a traditional domestic setting with a kitchen, bedroom and attic. These rooms give the museum its domestic scale and distinguish it from the thematically organized areas of the Quintal.

Another focus is the Núcleo Museológico do Pastel e da Serpentina, inaugurated in Ribeira Chã in December 2024. It presents the dyeing and culinary heritage of pastel and serpentina and documents their importance to the history of the town. The permanent exhibition includes a millstone that was used for pastel production until the mid-17th century. The cultural heritage also includes a mosaic panel from the main chapel by Tomás Borba Vieira and a tabernacle by Álvaro França.

Local Sweets and Festival

Malassada is a traditional Azorean Carnival sweet. In Ribeira Cha, it is made according to a recipe typical of the town and takes center stage at the annual Festival da Malassada. The festival includes musical performances by local groups from the Azores, with particular emphasis on groups from the municipality of Lagoa. The program may vary from year to year. Since the festival takes place annually, it is advisable to check the event dates before your trip.

Another local sweet is papas de farinha de serpentina. It is traditionally made from the rhizome of Arum italicum.

Walking Trails, Views and Nature

The Trilho Pedestre de Ribeira Chã is 8.4 kilometers long and takes about three hours. Its panoramic views stretch from Água de Pau to Vila Franca do Campo, with the sea and mountains in the background. The trail passes through a diverse range of flora and fauna. The bird species mentioned include the red kite, blackbird, chaffinch and goldcrest. Plants found along the way include Uva da Serra, holly, laurel and various types of fern. The trail description thus combines expansive views with a specific selection of local flora and fauna.

The Miradouro do Pisão offers views of the sea, the harbor and Caloura’s swimming pool, the Convento da Caloura and the surrounding areas. The viewpoint has a parking area and an access ramp for people with reduced mobility.

The linear Rota da Água-Pedras Brancas connects Ribeira Chã and Água de Pau, but it is closed. Along the route is the vertical Pedras Brancas trachyte wall, where climbing and rappelling are common. While the trail is closed, you should not plan these activities; carrying them out also depends on the trail’s status and safety conditions. The Núcleos Museológicos da Ribeira Chã are incorporated into the parish walking route.

Highlights for Your Stay

If you are looking for hotels in Ribeira Cha, let the focus of your days guide your plans: the museums explore art, domestic history and Azorean heritage, while the Trilho Pedestre and the Miradouro do Pisão put landscapes and views center stage. The closure of the Rota da Água-Pedras Brancas is an important restriction. Also check the dates of the Festival da Malassada when planning your trip if you would like to combine your stay with this annual event.
