Terra Alta brings together a clearly defined coastal landscape, a notable viewpoint, and trails with different points of interest. The 112-hectare protected area forms a coastal strip between the seashore and the edge of the cliffs. It stretches from Porto da Baixa (Ribeirinha) to Ribeira das Gramelas (Santo Amaro). This geographical span makes the coast the common thread of a visit: viewpoints, nature conservation, and trail experiences can be seen as different sides of the same destination.

Coastal Landscape and Nature Conservation

The protected area is also recognized by BirdLife International as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). The IBA recognition adds a second nature-related dimension to the specific coastal description. For choosing a destination based on nature interests, this is a distinct consideration alongside the panorama and routes.

Views from the Terra Alta Viewpoint

The Terra Alta Viewpoint is 415 meters above sea level, at the highest point of the sea cliff, and is part of the protected area. From there, enjoy panoramic views of São Jorge Island and the Pico–São Jorge Channel. In favorable weather conditions, Terceira Island and Mount Pico are also visible. This distinction matters when setting expectations: São Jorge and the channel are part of the panoramic view described; Terceira and Pico are visible in favorable weather.

The Caminho das Voltas

The Caminho das Voltas begins at the Miradouro da Terra Alta and ends in the center of Santo Amaro. The downhill trail passes through a forest where Incenso (Pittosporum undulatum) is the dominant species. It also features remnants of vineyard enclosures and small bridges made of dressed stone. Natural and built features meet along the same route: the forest defines the descent, while the enclosures and stone bridges provide visible traces of past use.

The trail also offers a detour to Baía do Canto, a small leisure area by the sea surrounded by local wine cellars. The Canto section of the Caminho das Voltas is used for swimming and picnics in summer.

Cart Tracks and Views at Canadas da Ribeirinha

The Canadas da Ribeirinha route follows the Caminho da Atalhada. Old ox-cart tracks are visible in the ground there. A detour leads to the Alto dos Cedros viewpoint, with views of São Jorge. Those choosing between the trail themes described will find different points of interest: the Caminho das Voltas focuses on the descent, forest, stone bridges, and detour to the sea; Canadas da Ribeirinha draws attention to the cart tracks and the Alto dos Cedros viewpoint.

A Local Legend

Terra Alta also has a local legend: it tells of a light that once traveled through Terra Alta and was seen by many residents. This story adds a local tradition to the specific landscape and trail details, with events explicitly set in the past.
