Faja is marked on the official map as a place along the PR1 GRA Serra Branca–Praia trail. The hiking trail and the volcanic landscape of Serra Branca provide a concrete framework for planning your trip. Historical themes from Guadalupe and the wider context of Graciosa are also part of the picture.

Hiking the PR1 GRA

The PR1 GRA Serra Branca–Praia is a 9 km linear hiking trail. It is rated easy; the average walking time is 2 hours and 30 minutes. The distance describes the route, the time given is an average, and “easy” is the difficulty rating. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

At the beginning, the trail loops around the volcanic vent Caldeirinha do Pêro Botelho. It is also known as Caldeirinha or Algar dos Diabretes and is designated a geosite. This connects practical route planning with a distinctive geological feature without assuming an additional route.

There is also a culinary tip for the journey: in the village section of the PR1 GRA, visitors are encouraged to try Graciosa’s star-shaped, very sweet Queijadas da Graciosa.

Serra Branca: Cliffs and Volcanism

The cliffs of Serra Branca reach heights of around 340 m in places northwest of Ponta Branca. This approximate figure applies to certain spots.

In Baía do Filipe, there is a transition between the trachytic rocks of Serra Branca and the basaltic formations at the foot of the Caldeira volcano. This area includes significant submarine Surtseyan tuff outcrops. They represent the early formation phase of the Caldeira volcano. So this is about more than different rock types: it also shows the connection between changes in rock and volcanic formation.

Another way to understand the area is through landscape unit G3, “Pastagens da Encosta de Serra Branca”: Faja and Esperança Velha both belong to this unit. This describes a shared landscape context, while the cliffs and Baía do Filipe each have their own geological features.

In the wider area around Faja, Serra Branca is part of IBA area PT062 and the core zone of the Graciosa Island Biosphere Reserve. Together with the landscape unit, it shows how the area can be viewed both in terms of individual geological formations and as a larger landscape.

Cultural History on Graciosa

In Guadalupe, the church replaced a chapel dating from the 16th century. Construction of the church took around 50 years because earthquake damage had severely affected the parish. Both the earlier chapel and the lengthy construction history shaped by earthquakes are central to this site.

The Casa Museu João Tomaz Bettencourt adds a glimpse into everyday life to Graciosa’s cultural history. The 19th-century house serves as a museum shop. Its complete furnishings were assembled by the people of Graciosa over a period of 23 years. Exhibitions and reconstructions give visitors a sense of everyday life on Graciosa from the late 19th century to the mid-1980s.

The church in Guadalupe thus represents the history of construction and earthquakes, while the Casa Museu focuses on furnishings and everyday life over an extended period.
