Sanguedo brings together church architecture, emigration history and the PR2 São Bartuíma, offering three different ways to explore the area. The religious buildings provide concrete points of interest for architecture and music; the hiking trail passes through woodland and rural fields to named natural landmarks and viewpoints. This makes it possible to shape your stay around the themes of local history and landscape.

Churches and Architectural History

The Igreja de Santa Eulália in Sanguedo has a pipe organ made by the German organ builder Sauer. The instrument has eight stops, one manual and a pedalboard. Stops are selectable sound colours; the manual and pedalboard refer to the keyboard and pedal sections. For travellers interested in sacred music, this is a tangible cultural point of interest.

The Igreja Paroquial (Santa Eulália) dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and has pilasters at the corners of the building. Pilasters are flat, column-like architectural features on a wall; at the corners, they create a vertical accent. The Capela de São Bartolomeu dates from the 18th century. This makes it possible to compare two different periods: the parish church is dated to the 17th and 18th centuries, while the chapel dates to the 18th century.

Emigration in the Townscape

Residential architecture also brings the history of emigration into the townscape. Sanguedo has houses and villas influenced by Brazil, France and the United States; this character is linked to the area’s high levels of emigration. The houses and villas make this history visible through its influence on architecture. The focus thus extends beyond individual religious buildings to the townscape and its diverse cultural connections.

PR2 São Bartuíma and Landscape

The PR2 São Bartuíma starts beside Casa dos Trilhos in Sanguedo. It passes through eucalyptus and pine forest, then rural fields, and returns via Parque de Lazer de Sãobartuíma. The Monumento da Carniceira, with its azulejo panel, is also on the PR2. The route therefore connects woodland and fields with a specific cultural monument. Check the starting conditions and trail condition before setting out.

Two important natural landmarks on the PR2 are Bosque de Merouce and Parque de Lazer de São Bartolomeu. Miradouro de S. Bartolomeu offers views of Sanguedo and the Passadiços das Ribeiras in Fiães and Lobão. The PR2 is described in terms of its route and natural landmarks, while the Miradouro is distinguished by its named views. If you plan to visit this viewpoint, check conditions before your visit.

Recreation Area by the Chapel

The recreation area beside Capela de S. Bartolomeu has picnic tables and a small barbecue area. Check the current condition of the facilities before visiting.
