Three clear themes offer a starting point for a trip to Lourosa: birdlife, green trails and local culture. Zoo de Lourosa is Portugal’s only ornithological park dedicated exclusively to birds. Flamingo feeding, a treetop high ropes course, Parque da Cidade and historic sites each offer a different focus. This gives you a way to start planning your trip based on whether wildlife, outdoor activities or history should take priority.

Birdlife at Zoo de Lourosa

Zoo de Lourosa is home to around 500 birds from 150 different species, spread across 80 enclosures. During a flamingo feeding session, visitors learn about the birds’ feeding habits, social structure and breeding behaviour. The feeding session focuses on a specific group of birds and their way of life; the zoo as a whole, by contrast, offers a wide range of species and enclosures. Travellers interested in birds therefore have two distinct options: the individual feeding session and its educational content, and the larger park dedicated exclusively to birds.

Trails and outdoor activities

Parque da Cidade de Lourosa is a large green space with landscaped paths and trails. At Parque Aventura, high ropes courses run through the trees and offer privileged views of Portugal’s only ornithological park. These are two different ways to spend time outdoors: paths and trails in a green space on the one hand, and treetop high ropes courses on the other. The view of the ornithological park connects the high ropes experience thematically with the zoo, while the green space’s paths offer a different way to get active.

The chapel and the history of the route

Capela de São Miguel at Largo da Feira dos Dez is a small, old religious building of great importance to the local community. The 2023 official route guide lists the seventh stage of the “Caminhos de Fátima | Caminho do Norte | Jornada 7” from Porto to Lourosa. The stage is 23 km long and ends at Capela de S. Miguel, also known as Capela da Feira dos Dez. The two names refer to the same chapel, not to two different stage destinations. The chapel is therefore both a local religious site and the stated endpoint of the stage: one detail concerns the community, the other the route. The 23 km refers to the entire section from Porto to the endpoint in Lourosa.

The history of cork and a watermill

At the beginning of the 20th century, cork came to Lourosa, changing the way of life of the population and the region’s economic context. Moinho do Parque do Rio Maior in Lourosa is a watermill. These topics differ in nature: the mill is a specific structure, while the history of cork describes changes in everyday life and the regional economy.
