A popular swimming area and traces of an unusual local history define Canto da Areia. When planning a stay, you can choose between different focuses, from the coast and walking trails to cultural history: the PRC09PIC offers a clearly defined coastal circuit, while other paths explore historic landscapes and the wine-growing region.

Swimming Area and Coastal Circuit

Canto da Areia has a popular swimming area and is also one of the few sandy beaches on Pico. The coastal section of route PRC09PIC passes Canto da Areia, one of its two bathing areas. PRC09PIC is an easy 8.8-kilometre circular trail with an average duration of three hours. If you choose this circuit, you can allow for this time as one continuous block in your plans and combine a coastal outing with a hike. Near BaĂa do Canto da Areia, PRC09PIC crosses the former wine-growing area of Morro. The coastal biotope at BaĂa do Canto da Areia is classified as a protected area for the management of habitats and species in Pico Island Natural Park.

The History of Casa do Fio

Casa do Fio gives Canto da Areia another historical dimension. A submarine cable to SĂŁo Jorge was anchored in Canto da Areia, and Casa do Fio served as its terminal station. During the First World War, the house accommodated a military contingent. Neighbours and friends also gathered there to spin combed wool into yarn. The cable connection, military use and communal handicraft are thus distinct chapters in the history of the same house.

Historic Trails in Prainha

The Percurso Cultural da Prainha do Norte passes through the historic centre of Prainha. The route follows an old cobbled path to Ribeira de Nossa Senhora; along the way, it offers panoramic views of Canto da Areia. Trilho da Prainha takes a different approach: stone bridges cross Ribeira de Nossa Senhora to the area's first houses, which are now considered immovable cultural heritage of Pico Island. This gives you a concrete distinction to consider: one trail offers a panoramic view of Canto da Areia, while the other crosses bridges to reach the houses recognised as cultural heritage.

Wine Landscape and Seasonal Use

BaĂa das Canas has wine cellars, vineyard walls, and paths and tracks surfaced with saibro. A variant of Caminho dos Burros ends at BaĂa das Canas; check the trail conditions before hiking. In the area of BaĂa de Canas, Convento dos Frades comprises a small chapel and a residential complex, which nearby monks used seasonally during the grape harvest. The harvest links the description of this complex to the rhythm of local wine-growing.

Cheese, Festival Connections and Choosing Accommodation

Cheese production is also a local feature: Queijaria Bettencourt makes traditional Pico cheese. The celebration of Trinity Sunday in Prainha de Baixa is connected with the “Irmãos” or the administrator of Canto da Areia. If this festival connection matters to your trip, check the dates for your travel days.
