Angeja can be explored through two distinct highlights: trails through the landscape of the Baixo Vouga Lagunar and buildings in the town centre. Parque do Areal brings both together as a useful landmark: the PR3 Trilho das Cegonhas starts here, while the PR4 Trilho da Pateira de Frossos reaches the park. This lets you experience the trails and the townscape as separate parts of your stay.

Trails through the landscape and town centre

Parque do Areal is situated on the Rio Vouga. There are picnic tables and benches for a break, as well as toilets, water points, a children's playground and fitness equipment. The park is therefore more than a green space by the river; it is also a useful landmark if you want to combine time outdoors with a stay in town.

From Parque do Areal, the PR3 Trilho das Cegonhas first passes through the town centre and then continues into the Baixo Vouga Lagunar. Along the way, the route crosses bocage, rice fields and pastures where storks nest. Its description thus combines a route through town with natural landscapes; the storks are a specific wildlife highlight along this trail.

The PR4 Trilho da Pateira de Frossos is an 8.15-kilometre, flat and easy circular route. It also follows a cycle path in the direction of Angeja and reaches Parque do Areal. The route details offer different points of reference when choosing a trail: the PR4 is described by its length, terrain and circular layout, while the PR3 is defined by its course from the park through the centre and into the lagoon landscape.

Espaço do Areal also helps you understand the landscape: it lies between the Cambeia dike and the Rio Vouga and is part of the Ria de Aveiro Special Protection Area. In the bocage, agricultural, wooded and aquatic habitats come together, attracting a diverse range of wildlife. If you are interested in landscapes and wildlife, you will find further specific points of interest here, beyond the trails themselves.

Buildings and local history

In Angeja's civic centre, the Pelourinho de Angeja stands in Praça da República. This block-type pillory dates from the 16th century. Its position in the square makes it an easy-to-locate feature of the townscape and a historical counterpoint to the trails leading from the centre into the landscape.

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Neves is a three-aisled church in the centre of Angeja. It was completely rebuilt at the end of the 17th century and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its three aisles describe the layout of the church interior, while its history spans several periods. This building offers a chance to consider its architectural form and historical development together.

The modest Capela de S. Sebastião, dating from the 17th century, stands at the northern entrance to the town. A fountain from the same century is right next to it. The Capela do Espírito Santo is also located at the northern entrance. This location helps you place the two chapels in the townscape without confusing them with the buildings in the centre.

Casa Velha in Angeja is an ensemble of two two-storey buildings with white façades and green doors. Here, the focus is on the character of a group of buildings: two structures, two storeys and a striking combination of façade and door colours. Along with the churches and chapels, the ensemble broadens the picture of Angeja's architectural variety.

Mill and local baked goods

Moinho do Ti Miguel, a watermill with three pairs of millstones, two of which are operational, is located in Fontão, Angeja. The mill is listed on the municipal reservation form for mill visits. If you are considering a visit, check the form in advance. This makes a visit to the mill a possible focus in its own right alongside the trails and buildings.

The local baking tradition is also connected to flour from the mills: bread, padas, regueifas and sweet bread are still made with it in Fontão. These varieties provide a specific culinary complement to the mill theme. Along with the riverside park, routes and townscape, they offer a range of things to discover, from which you can choose a focus to suit your interests.
