The Gmina Szczecinek lies in the Drawskie Lakeland. A distinctive natural area is Bagno Kusowo: the raised bog covers about 300 hectares and is considered one of the largest and best-preserved Baltic raised bogs in Poland.

Bogs, Lakes and Marked Trails

The protected areas also each have a different focus. “Jeziora Szczecineckie” is a landscape protection area within the Gmina. The 49.4-hectare water and flora protection area “Jezioro Kiełpino” protects relict aquatic plants. Lake Wielimie covers 17.9 km²; only part of the lake lies within the Gmina Szczecinek.

On the southern shore of Lake Wierzchowo, southeast of Wierzchowo, the “Wielkie Błoto” nature and forest educational trail runs through the area. It features five information boards, a wooden boardwalk across the bog and an observation tower. Check the trail’s current condition before your visit.

There are two routes with different focuses for hiking and cycling. The 161 km red-marked “Szlak Wzniesień Moreny Czołowej” hiking trail passes through the Gmina Szczecinek. The 65.1 km “Szczecineckie Jeziora” cycling trail is also marked in red. It passes through Spore, Stare Wierzchowo, Wierzchowo, Trzebiechowo, Kusowo and Dalęcino. Before setting out on a hike, it is worth checking the current trail markings and route conditions; you should confirm the cycling route locally.

Churches, a Castle and a Mural

Trzebiechowo’s historic character includes a castle complex dating from the second half of the 19th century and a church dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa. It dates from the third quarter of the same century.

Other churches can be compared by their dates of construction: the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Wierzchowo dates from the 18th century, the Holy Family Church in Spore from 1859 to 1865, and the All Saints’ Church in Wilcze Laski from 1894. These dates span the period from the 18th century to the late 19th century, without implying any particular architectural style.

The mural “Przewodzi Partia” in Wierzchowo adds a different historical note. It was created in 1975 and is still visible. As its visibility may change, check current local information if you are interested.

A Summer Event and Fishing from the Shore

The aviation picnic in Wilcze Laski takes place every year during the summer holidays. As the exact date varies, check the event date for your year of travel.

Recreational fishing at Lake Wierzchowo is also clearly regulated: a new order issued by the head of the Gmina took effect on 24 February 2026; fishing is permitted only from the shore. Check the applicable rules before fishing, as regulations may change.
