With a castle whose origins date back to the late 13th century, medieval architectural landmarks and a 12-hectare city park, Świdwin offers several different themes for a stay. Cultural history and parkland provide distinctly different experiences. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the specific differences: visitors can tour certain areas of the castle, the city's history is reflected in its surviving buildings and details, and the paths vary according to their designated use.

Castle Visits and Culture in a Historic Building

The origins of Świdwin Castle date back to the late 13th century. Visitors can tour the oldest wing in the north and the defensive tower. These house, among other things, an exhibition hall, a knights' hall, an event hall and museum rooms. The historical tour lasts about 45 minutes and is available only with a guide. Tickets for castle visits are sold at the tourist information centre. Since 1968, the Świdwiński Ośrodek Kultury has been based in a restored 13th-century castle that was converted into a cultural centre.

Church and City Fortifications

St Mary's Church is considered one of the city's most significant Gothic architectural monuments. It was first mentioned in historical records in 1338; a unique medieval granite baptismal font has been preserved inside the church. Another testament to medieval architecture is the Stone Gate (Steintorbrama): a remnant of the city fortifications, it was built in 1475 on the foundations of an older structure and remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. Of Świdwin's medieval city walls, a 14-metre section made of fieldstone and medieval bricks in the Wendish bond has survived above the Rega River.

The Jewish Cemetery

Świdwin's Jewish cemetery retains a stone wall with a square ground plan, an arrangement of avenues and burial plots, as well as numerous freestanding tombstones and grave slabs. It is one of the best-preserved Jewish cemeteries in West Pomerania.

City Park and Landscape Character

Świdwin's city park covers 12 hectares and lies in hilly terrain; its character is naturalistic. This gives it a different emphasis within the city from the medieval buildings: here, size and landscape take centre stage rather than construction phases and fortifications.

Walking and Cycling Routes in Świdwin

The “Kocioł Świdwiński” is a walking and cycling route that starts and ends in Świdwin; the Świdwin–Świdwin Osiedle cycle route connects the city with the residential estate near the air unit.

A Regional Route Focusing on Architecture

Within the wider Świdwin destination, the black-marked “Szlak Dziedzictwa Techniki i Architektury” (Technology and Architecture Heritage Trail) runs through the municipalities of Świdwin and Brzeżno. Within Świdwin County, it is 12.7 kilometres long. This makes it a region-wide themed route, while the other architectural landmarks mentioned are individual historic sites in the city.

Tradition and When to Visit

The timing of your visit may also matter: the recurring tradition “Bitwa o krowę” (“Battle for a Cow”) takes place every year, alternating between Świdwin and Białogard. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the venue and date in advance.
