Those who choose Dobra can explore the town’s history and a nature-and-history trail in one destination: the medieval street plan and half-timbered houses shape the townscape, while the four-kilometre-long Szlak Olbrzymów starts at the market square and leads to important sites in the surrounding area. This brings two distinct focal points together: architectural history in the town and archaeological and landscape features along the trail.

Townscape and Architectural History

Dobra has preserved its medieval street plan. The townscape is shaped by half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, with wooden features in the Biedermeier and Art Nouveau styles. Two periods can thus be distinguished: the medieval layout of the town and the later forms of its houses. The street plan describes the structure of the town, while the half-timbered houses are specific buildings—two different ways of approaching Dobra’s architecture.

Church and Historic Buildings

St Clare’s Church is located in the northwestern part of the town. It is designed as a three-aisled, four-bay hall in the Late Gothic style; its tower is Neo-Gothic. The terms describe different features: three-aisled and four-bay refer to the layout of the hall, while Late Gothic and Neo-Gothic distinguish the styles of the hall and tower.

Among Dobra’s most important historic attractions are the castle ruins of the von Devitz family. The Taber guesthouse is considered the oldest building in town still in use and is located at the market square on Kościuszki Street. Together, the church, castle ruins and guesthouse reveal different aspects of architectural history—from a religious building and a historic complex to a building still in use.

Szlak Olbrzymów: Archaeology Along the Trail

The Szlak Olbrzymów is four kilometres long and starts at the market square in Dobra. One of the trail’s important sites is Grodzisko Żurawi Ostrów on the Czapla Szyja peninsula. The peninsula is the trail’s most important attraction in the Dobra area; remains of a sixth-century pile-dwelling settlement were found there.

In the Middle Ages, a 170-metre-long pile bridge stood near the hillfort. It connected the peninsula with a rise on the opposite bank. The wooden structures excavated there are currently being studied archaeologically. These historical features represent different periods: settlement remains from the sixth century and a medieval bridge link.

Landscape, Lakes and Beach

North of Dobra, the Szlak Olbrzymów takes in the Dobrzenica River valley, valley slopes covered with meadows and forests, and the Czapla Szyja peninsula. Habitats for water birds and notable old trees can be found along the trail. Lake Leśne is also on the Szlak Olbrzymów: it covers 1.7 hectares, serves as a viewpoint and is a refuge for wetland birds. The trail thus brings archaeological sites together with a variety of landscape and natural features.

The town lake and town beach are separate from these sites: they are 700 metres from the town and offer a volleyball court, a beach soccer pitch and a brick fire pit. As facilities may change, check their current status before your visit.
