Between the 30.7-kilometre Leśny Szlak Sapiny and the 103-kilometre Duża Pętla Mamr, there is a wide range of cycling tours that start and end in Węgorzewo. The route profiles also differ: one off-road route is considered quite challenging because of its grassy terrain, while another includes both easier paved roads and difficult trails. The Sapina offers a different perspective on the region as a canoeing and sailing route. Masurian wooden houses and a cemetery for soldiers who fell in the First World War add specific cultural history to the sporting perspectives.
Cycling routes with different profiles
The 30.7 km Leśny Szlak Sapiny runs from Węgorzewo via Stręgiel, Stręgielek and Ogonki, and back to Węgorzewo. This makes it the shortest of the four cycling routes described. It provides a clear benchmark for comparison with the longer tours; information about terrain and climbs can also help you choose. Before setting out, check local information about current conditions.
The 44.4 km off-road cycling route via Kal, Kalskie Nowiny and Trygort also starts and ends in Węgorzewo. It is considered quite challenging because of its grassy terrain. For this tour, the terrain adds a specific indication of the route’s difficulty alongside its distance.
Szlakiem Gór is 53 km long and, also starting and finishing in Węgorzewo, runs via Czerwony Dwór, Pawłowo, Olszewo, Góry, Łęgwarowo, Pasternak, Wesołowo, Nowa Guja, Guja, Różewiec, Węgielsztyn and Trygort. Several steep climbs and descents are part of the route profile. The tour therefore offers two distinct points of reference for comparison: its overall distance and the described ups and downs.
At 103 km, Duża Pętla Mamr is the longest of the four routes. It starts and ends in Węgorzewo and runs via, among other places, Trygort, Mamerki, Sztynort, Giżycko and Ogonki. Both easier paved roads and difficult trails feature along the route. The different types of paths are an important part of its profile, so the route cannot be assessed by its length alone. Here too, check local conditions before cycling.
The Sapina and traces of culture
The Sapina is also a canoeing and sailing route. If you want to explore Węgorzewski in a way other than by bike, you can include another type of activity in your travel plans. Check current navigation conditions before setting out on the water.
The grounds of the Muzeum Kultury Ludowej include a small open-air museum featuring traditional Masurian architecture. It includes wooden residential houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. These houses give the subject a tangible architectural form: the focus is on dwellings from two specified centuries, providing a clearly defined cultural and historical perspective.
Cmentarz nad jez. Święcajty is a cemetery for soldiers who fell in the First World War. It contains the graves of 344 German and 234 Russian soldiers. Alongside architectural history, it offers another historical perspective: commemoration of the fallen from both groups.
