A museum in the town hall, a viewpoint in the 38-metre-high water tower and a supervised beach on Lake RoĹ› offer a variety of experiences in Pisz: regional collections, architectural history, views and time by the water. The route descriptions also differ in their sequences of places and approximate lengths. When choosing accommodation in Pisz, it therefore helps to consider whether your stay will focus more on culture, the water or a specific route. The following details provide concrete points of reference and make it easier to compare the possible options.
Museum and architectural history in Pisz
The Pisz Region Museum was founded in Pisz in 1969 and is currently housed in the town hall. It showcases the fauna and flora of the Puszcza Piska, Polish written records from Masuria, and documents relating to the history of Pisz. The collections bring together natural history, written records and local history. They complement the historic buildings with a look at the landscape and the history represented in the collections.
The Church of St John the Baptist retains a late Renaissance high altar and a Baroque pulpit dating from 1701. The furnishings distinguish between two periods: late Renaissance in the altar and Baroque in the pulpit. The church tower is considered the oldest historic building in Pisz. The ruins of the Teutonic Order castle offer a different perspective on the town’s history: they are the remains of a medieval fortress that guarded the former border between Prussia and Masovia. The church and castle ruins thus represent different aspects of history: religious architecture and an earlier border function.
Views and time by the water
The 38-metre-high water tower currently serves as a viewpoint. A bistro in the tower offers the opportunity to dine on the viewing terrace. As the bistro’s operations may change, check in advance whether you can plan to eat there during your visit. The town beach is a supervised beach on Lake Roś at al. Turystów 13. Its operating conditions may change seasonally, so check the latest information before your visit.
