Waplewo has a clear connection to the Marózka and several specific historic sites. A kayaking route on the river starts here; the brick church dates from 1870, and a military cemetery from 1914 lies on the outskirts of the village. There are also two cemeteries from the second half of the 19th century, one Catholic, while evangelical remains have been preserved at the other. Together, the water route and various traces of history sit side by side.

The Marózka and the excursion route

A kayaking route on the Marózka starts in Waplewo. In addition, an excursion route of around 36 km runs from Olsztynek through Waplewo to Maróz. The Olsztynek tourism portal lists car and bicycle as means of transport and recommends the church, the new school, and the 1914 military cemetery as stops in Waplewo. This distinguishes two ways to plan a visit: the kayaking route centers on the water, while the excursion route places Waplewo within a route that includes other named places. You can therefore choose between a kayaking route and a tour by car or bicycle.

The church dating from 1870

The brick church was built in 1870, replacing an older wooden building. The year dates the brick structure, not its predecessor. This sequence illustrates a specific change in local architectural history: an older wooden building was followed by a masonry church that still stands today. The church is therefore not only a recommended stop on the excursion route, but also a tangible point of reference for Waplewo’s architectural history.

Cemeteries with distinct traces of history

On the outskirts of Waplewo, by the E-7 and the road to Jadamowo, lies the large military cemetery from 1914. It is the burial place of 426 German soldiers, most of them identified, as well as 206 unknown Russian soldiers. The site thus links a precise year with two differently identified groups; its location on the edge of the village also sets it apart from the other cemetery sites.

North of Waplewo, by the E-7, lies a Catholic cemetery from the second half of the 19th century, visible from the road. The remains of an evangelical cemetery from the same period are located 200 m to the south, along a field track. These sites offer different historical points of focus: the military cemetery is notable for its date and the groups buried there, while the other two cemeteries are distinguished by their religious affiliation and, in the evangelical cemetery’s case, the remains that have survived. Their northern and southern locations also help distinguish the two cemetery sites.

Planning your trip

When deciding how Waplewo fits into your stay, it is helpful to distinguish between a single starting point and a longer excursion route: the kayaking route begins in the village, while the excursion route connects Waplewo with Olsztynek and Maróz. The church and cemeteries, meanwhile, offer several clearly distinct cultural and historical points of interest. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh these reasons for visiting without combining the sites into a single tour.
