A kayaking route begins on the Lega at Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie; fishing and waterside activities are also part of Olecko. At the same time, churches, the market square and historic sites tell the story of the town. Museums, cultural events and routes through river valleys complete the picture. For your stay, you can focus on architectural history, activities by the water or culture.
City history through architecture and urban space
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built between 1859 and 1861 and has been listed in the heritage register under number A-2963 since 15 December 1989. Its fittings include a wooden Neo-Gothic high altar from the second half of the 19th century, two side altars from the same period, a Neo-Gothic pulpit and a baptismal font. The historic urban layout dating from the 16th to the 19th century includes the market square and the adjoining streets. This ensemble is also listed: under registration number A-181 since 8 November 1956.
The Olecka Izba Historyczna presents a permanent exhibition on the history of Olecko. The exhibits include objects, documents and photographs connected with Olecko or Powiat olecki. Another chapter in the town’s history is the present-day building of the former starost’s office. It stands on the site of a castle built in the 17th century and destroyed by fire in 1822. The Regionalna Izba Pamięci is located on the second floor.
Olecko’s town park lies between Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie and Gołdapska Street. This historic site is dedicated to sport and recreation. Its historic diving towers in the bathing area are considered unique beyond the region. The pier with a diving tower on Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie was built around 1930 and is part of a listed sports, recreation and cultural centre in Olecko.
Lake, beach and routes
Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie is considered a sielawa-type lake and attracts anglers. The lake is also the starting point for a scenic kayaking route on the Lega. Facilities at Skocznia Beach on the lake include a pier, a diving tower, a water slide, a beach volleyball court, a WOPR lifeguard station, a bar and a watersports equipment rental.
For routes through the countryside, there are two options of different lengths and themes: the approximately seven-kilometre Dolina Pluskwianki educational trail follows the scenic valleys of the Pluskwianka River to the lake. The twelve-kilometre WiewiĂłrcza ĹšcieĹĽka cycling and walking route features information boards for nature education for children and young people. The first route focuses on the river valley and the lake as its destination, while the second offers a longer distance and information boards.
Culture, recreation and practical information
The Mazurskie Spotkania z Folklorem festival has been held since 1998 and was held again in Olecko in 2025. It celebrates traditional crafts, music, singing and folk dancing. The 2025 programme also included stalls selling homemade food and culinary workshops on Masurian specialities.
The Olecka Izba Historyczna holds meetings on the history of the town and region once a month. As dates may change, check the latest information before visiting. The Tourist Information Centre is located in the town centre at Plac Wolności 22. It offers printed sightseeing materials, souvenirs and information about attractions, current sports and cultural events, accommodation, restaurants and equipment rentals.
Another facility is the LEGA-SPA complex in Olecko, which includes a dry sauna, a steam sauna, a Roman steam bath, infrared lamps, experience showers, water jets, heated ceramic loungers, a massage room and a relaxation room. Alongside historic and waterside attractions, the town also offers wellness facilities.
