Karwie combines the history of a linear village with the landscape around Lake Karwie and western forests. Historic buildings and a local cold-pressed plant oil producer add to the character of the place.

Local History and Settlement Development

On 25 September 1555, the place was called Karffen. Georg von Diebes, starost of Ryn and Szestno, sold four sołectwo hides there for 198 marks to Matz von Mertinsdorf, that is, Maciej from Marcinkowo. The sale came with the obligation to settle the village with 40 hides (668 ha). The four hides sold and the 40 hides stipulated for settlement refer to different parts of the same transaction: one figure denotes the sale, the other the settlement requirement.

More than two centuries later, Karwie developed as a linear village in the 19th century. The term describes a settlement pattern in which buildings are arranged along a road. The cardinal directions also help to explain Karwie’s layout: to the north, the built-up area extended as far as Lake Karwie, while forests and the lake surround the western side of the village. The northern reference concerns the end of the built-up area; the western one concerns the landscape around Karwie.

Cemetery and Historic Buildings

The Evangelical cemetery dates from the mid-19th century. The brick residential building at Karwie 3 dates from the late 19th to the early 20th century; the residential building at Karwie 14 is from the early 20th century. The brick manor house at Karwie 9, built in the 1920s, served a different purpose. The various dates can thus be viewed as a chronological sequence, while the building types—cemetery, residential buildings and manor house—remain distinct. Historically, the span runs from the land sale in the 16th century to the early-20th-century houses and the manor house of the 1920s.

Location and Directions

Karwie lies 4 km southwest of Mrągowo on a regional road that leads to Grabowo and Rybno and continues to Szczytno. Two details can be used separately for orientation: the distance and cardinal direction place Karwie in relation to Mrągowo, while the road connection names other places along the route. If you are arriving by car, check current road conditions before setting out.

Oil Production in Karwie

Olejarnia No.1 at Karwie 51, 11-700 Karwie, cold-presses rapeseed oil and other plant oils in small batches. The business originated on a family farm in Mrągowo; production details may change. Cold pressing and small batches describe how the oils are made, while the business’s origins connect it to Mrągowo. In this way, oil production adds a local food dimension to Karwie’s history and landscape.
