Święta Lipka combines a strong pilgrimage tradition with a Baroque religious complex, a museum and organ demonstrations. These themes offer different ways to plan your visit: you can focus on the architecture, the Rosary chapels, exhibitions or music events.
Baroque Sanctuary and Special Distinction
The pilgrimage sanctuary is designated a Pomnik Historii (Historic Monument). It is considered an exceptionally high-quality Baroque religious complex and the oldest Marian cult centre in northern Poland. The monument includes the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cloisters surrounding it and the monastery. These elements form the core of the complex; the church also holds the title of minor basilica.
Pope John Paul II granted the church this title by decree on 24 February 1983. In Święta Lipka, the history of the pilgrimage site and the architecture of the religious complex are closely intertwined. Those interested in the site’s religious significance can consider these aspects alongside its architectural details.
Rosary Chapels and Pilgrimage Routes
The Rosary chapel complex consists of 15 chapels along the pilgrimage route from Reszel to Święta Lipka. The niches contain reliefs depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. The chapels are built of brick and plastered. Most have gabled roofs, while three have hipped roofs—a specific difference in the design of the individual buildings.
The final section of the pilgrimage route to Święta Lipka follows an unpaved path through the forest. To find your bearings, it is useful to distinguish this route from the “Gwiaździsta” (Star) pilgrimage: it leads to the sanctuary from Reszel, Kętrzyn, Mrągowo, Giżycko and nearby parishes. One route is marked by the 15 chapels along the way, while the other is defined by its named starting points.
Museum: Exhibitions and History
The Świętolipskie Museum has seven exhibition rooms with six permanent exhibitions, as well as temporary exhibitions. One exhibition is devoted to the history of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Święta Lipka. The museum therefore offers a distinct way to explore the site’s history, alongside the church, cloisters, monastery and chapels.
The collections on display include part of Saint John Paul II’s personal library. It comprises about 1,000 books and albums that were brought from Rome to Święta Lipka after his death. The approximate number and provenance of the collection give this museum feature its own connection to the history of the Pope, without requiring any additional exhibition theme.
The Świętolipskie Museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 from May to September. Seasonal opening hours may change; check the times before your visit.
Organ Demonstrations and Music Events
In Święta Lipka, visitors can hear the Baroque organ and watch its moving parts every day. The sanctuary publishes set demonstration times by day of the week. On Sundays and public holidays, they are scheduled for 10:00, 12:30, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:00; on Saturdays, for 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:30. On weekdays, the times are 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30 and 17:00.
Partly different times apply to groups of more than 20 people; some demonstrations must be arranged in advance. As demonstration times may change, it is advisable to check the current schedule. This allows you to plan a visit to an organ demonstration around your interest in the Baroque church, without assuming that the same times apply to all groups.
The organizers describe the Świętolipskie Music Evenings as an annual music event. Since 1989, the evenings have been held in the basilica during the summer holidays, on Fridays at 20:00; the individual programmes vary. For 2027, the organizers announced preparations for the 39th edition. No specific date for this edition has been announced. The organ demonstrations and summer music evenings are therefore two different musical events: fixed times are listed for the former, while the latter take place on a Friday evening during the season.
