A 6.5-kilometre municipal road runs between Janowo, Bornice and Lubnowy Wielkie. This gives Janowo a clear local connection. Other historic buildings are located in places within the Susz Municipality; some nature-related information concerns the municipality as a whole. Bałoszyce, Babięta Wielkie, Nipkowo and Januszewo are separate places within the municipality. When planning your trip, it is therefore useful to distinguish Janowo as a destination from the other places mentioned. When searching for a holiday rental, the exact place name can help you choose the location you want.
Palace, Church and Historic Places
The village of Bałoszyce is home to a Baroque palace dating from the 17th century. It was later remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style by Karl Otto Magnus von Brünneck, following a design by architect Luis Runge; an extensive park surrounds the building. Bałoszyce is also home to the Church of the Holy Family, likewise dating from the 17th century. The palace’s architectural history combines its Baroque origins with a later Neo-Gothic remodelling, while the church provides another link to the 17th century.
Historic buildings can also be found in other places within the municipality. The manor houses in Babięta Wielkie and Nipkowo are considered historically attractive places, as are the ruins of the palace in Januszewo. A manor house park and a roadside cross in Lubnowy Małe were entered in the register of monuments on 27 September 2017 under reference Z-69/2017. These dates serve different purposes: the 17th century refers to the construction period of the buildings in Bałoszyce, while 27 September 2017 is the date the park and roadside cross in Lubnowy Małe were registered. This distinction helps separate the buildings’ history from the register entry. If you wish to visit any of the sites, check access arrangements in advance.
Landscape and Nature in the Susz Municipality
The Susz Municipality lies in the Iława Lake District (Pojezierze Iławskie), characterised by extensive dense forests and numerous fish-rich lakes. The municipal area is also within the Iława Lake District Landscape Park (Park Krajobrazowy Pojezierza Iławskiego) and therefore also forms part of the European ecological network Natura 2000. The Jezioro Gaudy and Jezioro Czerwica nature reserves are located in the municipality; a protected landscape area runs along the Liwa River. The municipality’s natural environment also includes rare and endangered plants, as well as numerous animal species, many of which are protected.
These different aspects complement one another: the lakes and forests describe the region’s character, while the protected areas provide specific names to help with orientation. When planning your trip, it is therefore useful to distinguish Janowo as a place from the wider natural setting of the Susz Municipality.
Culture or Landscape as a Focus
There are two different ways to approach choosing a destination: cultural history can be explored through individual buildings and their respective locations, while information about the landscape concerns the wider setting of the municipality and the Iława Lake District. Those interested in architecture can use the names of the individual places to help plan their trip; nature enthusiasts can consider the protected areas alongside the regional landscape. This makes it possible to tailor the balance between local cultural sites and the wider landscape to your own interests.
