Rękusy lies in the southern part of the Ełk Lake District, which forms the central part of the Masurian Lake District. A hiking trail runs through the village; its history spans from a settlement charter in 1494 to a former school building dating from 1926. Góra Pilchowa and Bartosze add to the picture in the wider regional area. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping these features geographically distinct: lakes lie in the surrounding area, the hiking trail passes through Rękusy, and the two memorial sites belong to the wider regional context.

Nearby Lakes

Lake Mołdzie is 2.5 km from Rękusy. Lepaki (Lepaki Małe) is 3 km away, Guzki 3.5 km, Sunowo (Sanowo) and Szarek 3.8 km each, and Chrzanowo 4.2 km. Of the lakes listed, Mołdzie is the closest to Rękusy, while Chrzanowo is the farthest away. The distances make it possible to compare the lakes’ locations relative to the village. They help put the surrounding area in context without treating the bodies of water as part of Rękusy.

Hiking Trail and Birdwatching

The “Zabytkowe cmentarze” (“Historic Cemeteries”) hiking trail runs from Stare Juchy through Liski, Grabnik, Rogale, Guzki, Mołdzie, Ruska Wieś, Góra Pilchowa, Rękusy, and Bartosze to Ełk. This makes Rękusy part of a longer sequence of places along the route. If you plan to hike the trail, check its current condition before setting out.

A separate birdwatching event was a one-off ornithological outing held as part of the European Bird Days. A report dated October 7, 2024, records the outing of October 6 and names the Centrum Edukacji Ekologicznej and the Klub Miłośników Ptaków as its organizers. The route went from Ełk through Rękusy, Ruska Wieś, Rogale, Lake Sawinda, and Lake Sunowo, before returning to Ełk. It lasted 3.5 hours, and twelve people took part. This shows two distinct routes: the hiking trail and its sequence of places, and the one-off outing with its own route through Rękusy.

Local History and Memorial Sites in the Wider Area

In 1494, Rękusy received a settlement charter under Magdeburg Law. Commander Rudolf von Tippelskirchen granted Marcin Rękus, also known as Matz Ranckus, 7.5 łans of land. The former school building provides a much more recent point of reference: it dates from 1926, is made of brick, and has been renovated and remodeled several times. The two dates are 432 years apart. Together, they mark an early settlement and a later building from the village’s history, without reducing the renovated and remodeled school to a single original state.

In the wider regional area, the history leads to two memorial sites from different wartime periods. On Góra Pilchowa, graves of German and Russian soldiers who died during the fighting from 1914 to 1918 lie hidden among the trees. In Bartosze, there is a cemetery from the Second World War containing the remains of more than 24,000 soldiers and civilians. It is the largest cemetery of its kind in Warmia and Masuria. These two places broaden the perspective beyond Rękusy: Góra Pilchowa is associated with those who died between 1914 and 1918, while Bartosze is the site of a burial ground from the Second World War.
