Rychliki offers a cultural and historical focus for trip planning, as well as access for cyclists. The church, cemetery and historical traces point to different periods in the village’s history. The green cycle route along the Elbląg Canal also passes through the village. When choosing a destination, you can therefore distinguish between local historical traces and the village’s place on a longer cycle route.
Church and Local History
The present-day Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rychliki was built between 1875 and 1877 under Pastor Wilhelm Gottfried Grzybowski. Grzybowski furnished it with most of the items he had made himself. The church is included in both the register and the inventory of historic monuments. Its construction and furnishings provide a tangible focus for the village’s church history.
In the 17th century, sermons in Rychliki were delivered in Polish; in 1947, an independent parish was established at the church. The sculpture “Head of Christ with Crown of Thorns” by Wilhelm Gottfried Grzybowski, dating from 1853, is kept in the rectory. This date predates the construction of the present-day church and adds an earlier-dated work to the picture of Grzybowski.
A protected Protestant cemetery in Rychliki dates from the first half of the 19th century. Chronologically, it predates the sculpture from 1853 and the church built between 1875 and 1877. Together with the independent parish established in 1947, these mark different periods in the local church history.
Cycle Route and Landscape
A municipal route description from 2020 names the green cycle route along the Elbląg Canal as a connection between Elbląg and Iława; the route passes through Rychliki. This places the village on a longer cycle route, while the church and cemetery draw attention to specific historic sites. If you are using the cycle route for a particular trip, check its current course and conditions in advance.
Rychliki was founded on 1 January 1310 in a wooded area; part of this forest has been preserved in the surrounding area. The woodland connection complements the later church-related dates with an early stage in the village’s history and a link to the landscape.
Historic Butter Deliveries
After the dairy cooperative was founded in 1890, butter from Rychliki became known for its quality and was delivered to Berlin and Szczecin twice a week. This episode adds an economic perspective to the church history: alongside church construction and parish records, it highlights the historic trade in a local product.
For deciding where to travel, it helps to consider the different scales: the historical sites are specific to Rychliki, while the cycle route and butter trade extend beyond the village. You can thus weigh up whether you are mainly interested in local history or would like to see Rychliki as part of longer connections.
